Yellow Emperor asked, "When people are born with epilepsy (Dian Ji), where does it come from?" Qibo replied, "This originates when the fetus is in the womb; the mother has frequently experienced great fright."
Acupuncture should be applied to the Hand-Yangming and Hand-Taiyang meridians. If the right side is strong, treat the left; if the left is strong, treat the right. Stop when the blood changes color. Patients with epilepsy often contend with pathogenic factors. When an attack occurs, observe them; if there is excess, drain it. Place the extracted blood in a gourd vessel. At the time of the attack, the blood will move independently. Moxibustion on the coccyx (Qionggu) for ten moxa cones.
Treating epilepsy: if the patient becomes manic upon onset, and the facial skin is thick and rough, it is a death syndrome and difficult to treat.
Generally, when epilepsy attacks, the patient lies on the ground, foams at the mouth, and loses consciousness. If forcibly lifted up behaving like mania, or suffering from fecal incontinence, it is difficult to treat. The pulse of epilepsy appearing large and slippery will naturally resolve after a long duration.
This disease arises from the blockage of the Six Fu Organs. Jue (reversal) develops into epilepsy, so Jue is attached to this section. Yin deficiency leads to heat Jue; Yang deficiency leads to cold Jue.
Yellow Emperor asked, "What causes the cold and heat symptoms in Jue?" Qibo replied, "Yang Qi deficient in the lower part results in cold Jue; Yin Qi deficient in the lower part results in heat Jue."
Therefore, Yang Qi... below the knee... or... fullness causes lower Qi to rise heavily, and pathogenic Qi reverses. Reversal causes Yang Qi to become chaotic; chaos leads to loss of consciousness. In Jue of the Greater Yang Meridian, there is swelling and heaviness of the head, inability to walk, and onset of... cheek... Yin... internal (or external) heat. Excess is drained; deficiency is tonified. Neither excess nor deficiency is treated by selecting points from the affected meridian. For upper cold and lower heat, first needle the Taiyang points in the neck to guide the Qi trapped in the meridians downward until it subsides. This is called 'guiding downwards.' To needle heat Jue, retain the needle to induce cold sensation; to needle cold Jue, retain the needle to induce heat sensation. To needle heat Jue, use two Yin needles and one Yang needle; to needle cold Jue, use two Yang needles and one Yin needle. 'Two Yin' means needling Yin meridians twice; 'Two Yang' means needling Yang meridians twice.
In warm diseases, heat in the Kidney manifests as redness and spasms. Children with severe heat in epilepsy (Xian Bing) also develop spasms. Wind aphasia, sudden corpse-like Jue, and sleep paralysis (Gui Yan) all present similarly and must be carefully differentiated.
There are five types of epilepsy. The first is Yang Epilepsy; during an attack, the patient appears dead, urinates involuntarily, and recovers after a while. The second is Yin Epilepsy; restlessness, originating from unhealed umbilical wounds at birth... protruding... heavy body... hours... Bone Epilepsy involves fullness in the acupoints of the jaw and teeth, and in the muscle masses, with rigid skeletal stiffness, sweating, irritability, excessive vomiting of saliva, downward leakage of Qi, and urinary difficulty. Tendon Epilepsy... limbs... muscle origin...
How to distinguish between Epilepsy and Mania? Answer: At the onset of Mania, there is little sleep, no hunger, arrogance, delusional laughter, and singing. It is also said that patients with Epilepsy have disordered spirit... six livestock... also all...
Anyone suffering from epilepsy or mania who shouts and hits others has Heat in the Heart Meridian. Use heart-calming medicines combined with Rhubarb to induce several bowel movements, then use calming medicines. Avoid... and fright... less... wind... formula...
Musk Pill (from Shengji Zonglu): Treats wind-epilepsy with convulsions. Deviation of mouth and eyes, foaming at the mouth, sounds from the throat, unconsciousness.
