The pulse at the cunkou (radial artery) in lung flaccidity syndrome (Fei Wei, a condition characterized by lung tissue wasting and weakness) is rapid. The patient suffers from coughing but instead expels turbid saliva and frothy phlegm. Why is this? The Master said: This is lung flaccidity syndrome. How does one acquire it?
The Master said: Heat pathogen resides in the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner). Due to coughing, it develops into lung flaccidity syndrome. It may arise from excessive sweating, or from vomiting, or from Xiao Ke (Wasting and Thirsting Syndrome, often corresponding to diabetes) causing frequent urination, or from difficulty in defecation where repeated use of purgative drugs severely depletes body fluids (Jin Ye), thus leading to lung flaccidity. Furthermore, if the cunkou pulse is faint and unobtainable, yet sweating methods are incorrectly applied, the Yang pulse becomes depleted early, while the Yin pulse is not choppy. The Qi of the Three Jiao lingers, entering but unable to exit. If the Yin pulse is not choppy, and the cunkou pulse is rapid and deficient, feeling choppy upon heavy pressure, the body feels cold while the interior feels vexed and hot, there is excessive salivation, dry lips, and difficulty in urination; this is also lung flaccidity, caused by injury to body fluids. The stool resembles rotten melon, and excretions resemble pig brain; this is solely due to erroneous sweating. The disease presents as wanting to cough but being unable to do so, coughing up dry foam, and over time, difficulty in urination with a calm and weak pulse. In lung flaccidity, patients expectorate saliva and foam without coughing, feel no thirst, experience urinary incontinence, and have frequent urination. The reason for this is that upper deficiency fails to control the lower. This belongs to Cold in the Lungs, inevitably accompanied by dizziness. The Master said: For lung flaccidity with coughing, expectoration, and dry throat, healing occurs spontaneously if the patient desires to drink water. Those who breathe with an open mouth suffer from shortness of breath (Duan Qi).
The Lung is the canopy of the five Zang organs, obtaining Qi from all meridians, moving blood vessels, protecting and nourishing the Fu and Zang organs, and irrigating the skin and hair. If regulation is improper, Qi and Blood become chaotic, resulting in lung flaccidity or lung abscess. Although all five Zang organs can suffer from flaccidity and abscesses, this condition is discussed uniquely because the Lung belongs to Metal, its numerical limit is Nine (Yang Nine), it occupies the highest position, and acts as the leader of the internal Zang organs, making it prone to this disease; hence, it is discussed separately.

If the source is cut off, Kidney deficiency occurs, and severe cases of Wei Jue (Flaccidity and Cold Extremities) arise, with flaccidity and paralysis below the waist.
