[Supplementary Discussion]
The *Neijing* (Inner Canon) states that the qi of grains and food connects with the Spleen. This is because deficiency allows for reception (referring to the Spleen's function of transportation and transformation; if obstructed by pathogenic factors, it cannot receive; here it implies that tonifying the deficient Spleen-Stomach enables reception). The Spleen and Stomach serve as the "granaries and stores" (referring to their role in receiving and transforming water-grain essence), thusly. If the Qi of the Spleen and Stomach is disharmonious, there will be abdominal distension and fullness due to emptiness.
One cannot eat or drink. Treatment should involve regulating diet and adapting to cold and warmth, then the illness will heal itself.

Symptoms include fullness and stuffiness in the four limbs, painful joints, difficulty bending and stretching, heavy body, vexation and uneasiness, fluctuating weight (suddenly fat or thin), lazy and fatigued limbs, loss of taste in the mouth, difficulty extending again, clear and frequent urination and defecation, or drinking leads to immediate urination, or constipation with infrequent bowel movements (once every one or two days). Summer presents with undigested stool, or blood and white pus after defecation, chest fullness and shortness of breath, obstruction in the diaphragm and throat, thick and sticky phlegm cough, foaming in the mouth, food regurgitation, tinnitus and deafness, fire flowing in the eyes, blurred vision, red filaments in the [eyelid?] flesh, heat congesting the head and eyes, inability to lie down comfortably, lethargy and weakness, and loss of appetite.
Ingredients: Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) (2 fen), Huangqi (Astragali Radix) (1 qian), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (5 fen), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (5 fen), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) (1 fen or 2 fen, add if Qi does not circulate), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (5 fen, remove if coughing), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) (2 fen, these two ingredients address Qi deficiency where Stomach and Spleen Qi sink; they tonify upper Qi, drawing Yang from Yin), Jupi [Citrus Peel] (2 fen, add another 1-2 fen if abdominal Qi fails to circulate). Cut the above herbs like hemp beans, prepare as one dose, decoct 2 bowls of water until 1 bowl remains, strain and take hot. Take after residual food is digested. Calm the mind and eliminate distracting thoughts, the medicine will be miraculous. The disease lies in the four limbs and blood vessels, taken on an empty stomach in the morning. If obvious heat and dryness appear, this is steaming from Yin fire in the lower origin. Add Zhen Shengdi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) 2 fen, Huangbo (Phellodendri Cortex) 3 fen. If the stool is loose and unsuitable for taking, or if defecation is incomplete with constant abdominal pressure, this is Blood deficiency and stagnation. Add Danggui Shen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix radix portion). If the body feels heavy, even with frequent urination, also add Fuling 2 fen, Cangzhu 1 qian, Zexie 5 fen, Huangbo 3 fen. This is a temporary measure to dispel dampness, not for long-term use. It also involves the Foot Taiyin channel. The pulse ultimately reaches the Heart, hence damp-heat combines to cause confusion. If Stomach Qi is disharmonious, add Banxia (Pinelliae Tuber) washed in soup 0.5 qian, 3 slices of fresh ginger. If coughing, add fresh ginger and Shengdi Huang 2 fen to counteract Banxia toxicity. For Phlegm-Jue headache, only Banxia can resolve it; this is caused by the Foot Taiyang channel. Another school attributes it to the Foot Taiyin channel. If none of the above symptoms exist, take only:
Huangqi (Astragali Radix) (1 qian), Zhi Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (0.5 qian), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) (3 fen), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (0.5 qian, remove if coughing), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (0.5 qian), Huangbo (Phellodendri Cortex) (2 fen, wine-washed), Jupi (Citrus Peel) (add 1 fen if abdominal Qi fails to circulate, or add Muxiang 1 fen or 2 fen; if no such symptom, do not add, use only 3 qian Jupi), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) (3 fen, these two ingredients address insufficient upper Qi where Stomach and Spleen Qi are not weak; they tonify upper Qi, drawing Yang from Yin). Cut the above herbs like hemp beans, decoct according to previous methods. If combined with dryness-heat, add Huangbo 2 fen and Shengdi Huang 2 fen. If none of the above symptoms exist, take only the previous medicine. In summer, add Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 3 fen; especially suitable in spring if abdominal pain occurs. If aversion to heat with thirst or abdominal pain, add Baishao 0.5 qian and Sheng Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) 2 fen. If aversion to cold with abdominal pain, add Zhong Gui (Cinnamon Twig) 3 fen, remove Huangqin, called Guizhi Shaoyao Tang. Also decoct with Gui added to Shaoyao Tang. In winter, if abdominal pain, do not use Baishao as it is a great cold herb; instead add Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) 2-3 fen, or add Banxia 5-7 fen, controlled by a little fresh ginger. In autumn and winter months, the Stomach pulse has four pathways, reversed by Chong and Ren pulses, under the hypochondrium, and along the Shaoyang pulse two pathways reversing upward, the disease is named Jue-Ni (Reversal Cold). Symptoms include Qi rushing up to the throat, inability to breathe, wheezing with sound, and inability to lie down. Use Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus) 0.5 qian or 1.5 qian, wash in soup to remove bitterness, use according to the amount of Jue Qi, also prepare as one dose with the previous medicine. If this symptom occurs in summer, it indicates great heat. This disease changes with the four seasons into cold, heat, warmth, and coolness. It is appropriate to use Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) wine-washed, Huangbo (Phellodendri Cortex) wine-washed, and Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) wine-washed in equal parts, grind into fine powder, form pills with hot water the size of paulownia seeds. Take 100 or 200 pills each time, washed down with plain water, on an empty stomach, so as not to leave residue in the Stomach, suppress with a good meat breakfast. This treats diseases obtained from dietary irregularity and fatigue, which are signs of Xu Lao Seven Damages.
