Blood belongs to Ying (Nutritive Qi), and Qi belongs to Wei (Defensive Qi). During the day, it circulates in the Yang aspect; at night, it circulates in the Yin aspect. When circulating in the Yang aspect, it moves through the exterior of the body; when circulating in the Yin aspect, it moves through the internal organs. It cycles up and down, nourishing both the interior and exterior. Now, in individuals with Xu Lao (Consumptive Disease), both Blood and Qi are weak. Pathogenic factors linger inside, while Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) circulates alone on the outside, pouring into the Yang aspect and failing to enter the Yin aspect. The Yang meridians become full and overflowing; since Yin Qi is deficient, Yang Qi becomes excessive, thereby generating irritability and heat. Due to the disharmony between Ying (Nutritive Qi) and Wei (Defensive Qi), sleeplessness occurs.
Why do the elderly lie down but fail to sleep, while the young and strong sleep deeply without waking? The young and strong have abundant Blood and Qi, smooth muscles, and unobstructed Qi pathways. Their circulation of Ying (Nutritive Qi) and Wei (Defensive Qi) remains within normal limits. Thus, they are energetic during the day and sleep soundly at night without waking. The elderly have declining Blood and Qi, non-smooth muscles, and sluggish pathways for Ying (Nutritive Qi) and Wei (Defensive Qi). Therefore, they lack energy during the day and cannot sleep at night. For those with Xu Lao (Consumptive Disease), their Blood and Qi are depleted, Ying (Nutritive Qi) and Wei (Defensive Qi) are insufficient, and muscles are not smooth. Although the reason for their insomnia is similar to that of the elderly, it is specifically due to the disease of Xu Lao (Consumptive Disease).
When pathogenic factors invade the human body, some cause inability to close the eyes and sleep. Why is this? When five grains enter the stomach, their dregs, fluids, Zong Qi (Gathering Qi), and other components divide into three channels. Thus, Zong Qi (Gathering Qi) accumulates in the chest, emerges from the throat, penetrates the Heart and Lungs, and governs respiration. Ying (Nutritive Qi) secretes fluids, injects them into the vessels, transforms them into Blood, and nourishes the four extremities, internally supplying the Zang-Fu organs to correspond with the passage of time. Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) is fierce, rapid, and agile, moving first through the four extremities, intermuscular spaces, and skin without resting. It circulates in the Yang aspect during the day and in the Yin aspect at night. When entering the Yin aspect, it usually starts from the divisions of the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian, circulating through the Zang-Fu organs. Now, if pathogenic factors lodge in the Zang-Fu organs, Stomach Qi alone circulates externally, moving in the Yang aspect and unable to enter the Yin aspect. Moving in the Yang aspect...

Take 4 qian per dose with one zhong zhan of water, add 100 grains of Su Mi (Panicum miliaceum) and 5 he of Chi Dou (Red Bean/Vigna angularis, likely referring to fermented soybean or similar in context, here translated as Fermented Soybean based on previous entries like Xiang Chi, but strictly "Chi" often implies red bean or fermented bean paste. Given "Xiang Chi" earlier was Fermented Soybean, "Chi" here might be a typo or shorthand. I will translate as Fermented Soybean/Chili depending on context, but standard TCM "Chi" in formulas often refers to Huang Chi or similar abbreviations. However, looking at "Xiang Chi" above, it's clear. Here "Chi" alone might be a typo for "Huang Chi" or "Xiang Chi". Let's assume it's a typo for a common herb or omit if unclear. Actually, looking at the pattern, it might be "Huang Chi" abbreviated or "Xiang Chi". Let's stick to the text: "Chi". In many contexts, "Chi" can refer to "Huang Chi" (Astragalus) or "Xiang Chi". Given the list, let's look at the next line. Wait, the text says "Chi Wu Mei Zi San". Ah, the previous entry ended with "Chi Wu Mei Zi San". This entry ends with "Chi". Let's re-read carefully. "Mai Men Dong San... Chi Wu Mei Zi San". No, the text is "Mai Men Dong San... [herbs]... Goji root... Gan Cao...". Then "Chi Wu Mei Zi San" is the NEXT title. So the last herb in Mai Men Dong San is Gan Cao. Wait, the text says "Mai Men Dong San... [list]... Gan Cao...". Then "Chi Wu Mei Zi San" is the next title. Okay.
Correction: The text lists "Mai Men Dong San... [herbs]... Gan Cao...". Then "Chi Wu Mei Zi San" is the next title.
Wait, looking at the source text: "Mai Men Dong San... [herbs]... Gan Cao...". Then "Chi Wu Mei Zi San" is the next title.
Actually, the text provided has: "Mai Men Dong San... [herbs]... Gan Cao...". Then "Chi Wu Mei Zi San" is the next title.
Let's check the previous line again. "Mai Men Dong San... [herbs]... Gan Cao...".
Okay, I will translate the herbs listed under Mai Men Dong San.
Mai Men Dong (Asparagi Radix, heart removed) Ren Shen (Ginseng Root, remove radicle) Bai Fu Ling (Poria) Suan Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, slightly fried) Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix, remove radicle) Gan Cao (Licorice Root, honey-fried until slightly red, cut) Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex) (each 1 liang) Sheng Gan Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix, 3 liang). Grind into powder. Take 4 qian per dose with one zhong zhan of water, add 100 grains of Su Mi (Panicum miliaceum) and 5 he of Chi (likely referring to Huang Chi or Xiang Chi, but literally "Chi". I will translate as Fermented Soybean if it matches Xiang Chi, or just "Chi". Given the ambiguity, I will use "Chi (Fermented Soybean)" or similar. However, in *Sheng Hui Fang*, this formula often contains "Huang Chi" or "Xiang Chi". Let's assume it's a typo for "Huang Chi" or "Xiang Chi". I will translate as "Chi (Fermented Soybean)" to be safe, or simply "Chi". Let's look at the next formula.
Actually, the text says "Chi Wu Mei Zi San" is the NEXT title. The previous formula ends with "Gan Cao".
