Use human beard hair, burn it to ash, and apply it to the sore; it will heal immediately. Li Ji of the Tang Dynasty once fell ill, and his physician stated that treatment would only cease upon ingestion of beard ash. Emperor Taizong therefore personally cut off his own beard, burned it to ash, and bestowed it for him to ingest. Hence, Bai Juyi wrote: "Boiling beards into medicine, bestowing them upon meritorious officials."

(Attached Discussion)
Carbuncles manifesting externally are visible to humans and are still considered critical ailments. How much more dangerous are those hidden within the intestines, causing pain in unpredictable locations and remaining invisible?
Generally, carbuncles and ulcers arise in five primary sites. Externally, they present as back carbuncles (*Fabei*), brain carbuncles (*Fanao*), eyebrow carbuncles (*Famei*), beard carbuncles (*Faxu*), and cheek carbuncles (*Fayi*). Internally, they present as intestinal carbuncles (*Changyong*), heart carbuncles (*Xinyong*), kidney carbuncles (*Shenyong*), lung carbuncles (*Feiyong*), and umbilical carbuncles (*Qiyong*). With proper treatment, there is hope; a slight error leads to total collapse. Why? In intestinal carbuncles, the patient's skin becomes rough like fish scales, the abdominal wall is tense resembling swelling, yet feels soft upon palpation. There is no high fever, and no masses in the abdomen. This results from the accumulation of yin-cold. It should be treated with damp-warming herbs. If there is no sweat, shivering, and aversion to cold, accompanied by a hard, swollen lower abdomen that is painful to touch, and frequent, difficult urination resembling strangury, this indicates internal heat binding. Cool purgatives should be used. A slow, tight pulse indicates unsuppurated stage where purgation is appropriate; a rapid, surging pulse indicates suppuration where purgation is contraindicated. Severe cases involve abdominal distension, audible fluid sounds when turning, sores around the navel discharging pus, chronic pus discharge from the umbilicus, or frequent passage of pus and blood in stool. These are all malignant signs. Symptoms such as alternating chills and fever, shortness of breath, irritability, thirst, palpitations,惊惧 (fright), vomiting, expectoration of pus, coughing with phlegm, spontaneous sweating, and diarrhea mirror common carbuncle symptoms and are similarly present in intestinal carbuncles. Women are particularly susceptible. The *Neijing* states: In *Xiben* disease, patients may suffer for two or three years with mild generalized edema, eventually passing pus and blood from both the bowels and the umbilicus, leading to death. This too belongs to the category of intestinal carbuncles.
A slippery pulse at the cunkou position indicates excess; a rapid pulse indicates heat. Slippery relates to Ying (Nutritive Qi); rapid relates to Wei (Defensive Qi). When Wei descends and Ying ascends, encountering heat causes them to conflict, turbidifying the blood. This leads to lower abdominal fullness, difficulty urinating or sweating, or recurrent aversion to cold, indicating suppuration has formed. If the pulse is slow and tight, stasis of blood is aggregated; downward movement of blood brings cure. Delay in suppuration prolongs the illness. Furthermore, floating-rapid pulses usually indicate fever; if instead there is shivering and aversion to cold with localized pain, pus is accumulating. Slippery-rough pulses indicate bleeding from small intestine carbuncles. The *Qianjin Fang* records: An official’s wife fell ill. How did the physician know there was pus in her abdomen? She was cured by purgation. He replied: The cunkou pulse was slippery and rapid. Slippy indicates excess; rapid indicates heat. Slippy is Ying; rapid is Wei. Rapid Wei descends, slippery Ying ascends. Their conflict causes abdominal fullness and hardness, urinary difficulty or sweating, or recurrent aversion to cold, confirming suppuration. If the pulse were slow and tight, it would be blood stasis, cured by purgation.
