Nasal dryness accompanied by an absence of nasal discharge is caused by the stagnation of qi in the zang-fu organs, where accumulated heat within attacks the upper jiao (upper burner). Wind pathogens lodge in the lung; lung qi connects with the nose and governs the secretion of nasal mucus.

Shenming Qing Gao (Divine Spirit Green Ointment) (from *Qianjin Fang*): Treats nasal dryness. Method: Instill into the nose, combine with massage, and administer internally.

Preparation and Administration: Soak the above ingredients in one dou of bitter wine (Ku Jiu). Use three stoves located in the southeast corner. Place all herbs inside. Cook using reed firewood. Prepare three piles of fresh, good soil. When the medicine boils, remove it from the fire and place it on the soil pile. Repeat this process of boiling and cooling three times. Once prepared, strain the liquid through new cloth to remove dregs. For external conditions, apply after heating with fire and massage; for internal conditions, take with warm wine. Form pills the size of a date pit. Take three times daily. After symptoms improve, gradually increase the dose until efficacy is achieved.

Xijiao San (Rhinoceros Horn Powder) (from *Shenghui Fang*): Treats lung heat causing nasal dryness without discharge, and mental restlessness.
Ingredients: Rhinoceros Horn Shavings (*Rhinocerotis Cornu*, Xijiao), Thoroughwort Stem (*Akebiae Caulis*, Mutong), Red Poria (*Polypori Umbellati Sclerotium*, Chifuling), Bupleurum Root (*Bupleuri Radix*, Chuan Shengma), Scutellaria Root (*Scutellariae Radix*, Huangqin), Niter (*Natrii Sulfas*, Mayaxiao), Apricot Seed (*Armeniacae Semen Amarum*, Xingren) (soaked in water, skin and tip removed, double-kernel bran-fried to light yellow, each 1 fen).

Mutong San (Thoroughwort Powder) (from *Shenghui Fang*): Treats accumulated heat in the lung causing frequent redness of the cheeks, dry skin, nasal dryness without discharge, and frequent headache and eye pain.
Ingredients: Thoroughwort Stem (*Akebiae Caulis*, Mutong, 1 liang), Ophiopogon Tuber (*Ophiopogonis Tuber*, Maimendong, 1.5 liang, heart removed), Red Poria (*Polypori Umbellati Sclerotium*, Chifuling, 1 liang), Gypsum Fibrosum (*Gypsum Fibrosum*, Shigao, 2 liang), Rhinoceros Horn Shavings (*Rhinocerotis Cornu*, Xijiao, 0.5 liang), Mulberry Root Bark (*Mori Cortex*, Sanggenbaipi, 1 liang, shaved), Apricot Seed (*Armeniacae Semen Amarum*, Xingren, 1 liang, soaked, skin and tip removed, fried to light yellow), Licorice Root (*Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*, Gancao, 0.5 liang, honey-fried to light red, shaved), White Peony Root (*Paeoniae Radix Alba*, Baiqian - *Note: Baiqian usually refers to Cynanchum stauntonii root, not Paeonia, translation adjusted to standard herb name*) (*Cynanchi Stauntonii Radix*, Baiqian, 1 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above into powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add one zhong of water, decoct until reduced to 0.6 zhong. Strain and take warm after meals.

Tianmendong San (Asparagus Root Powder): Treats lung congestion and brain heat causing nasal dryness without discharge, constipation and sluggish bowel movements, and mental irritability during sleep.
Ingredients: Asparagus Root (*Asparagi Radix*, Tianmendong), Rhubarb (*Rhei Radix et Rhizoma*, Dahuang), Bupleurum Root (*Bupleuri Radix*, Shengma), Mulberry Root Bark (*Mori Cortex*, Sangbaipi), Aurantium Fruit (*Aurantii Fructus*, Zhike), Licorice Root (*Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*, Gancao) (each 0.5 liang), Schizonepeta Spike (*Schizonepetae Spica*, Jingjie, 1 liang).
