1. The female owner of the Lai residence, nearing thirty years of age, suffered from *Xu Sun* (Deficiency and Damage) complicated by pain due to *Hou Xuan* (Throat Lichen/Atrophic Pharyngitis), with no effect from multiple physicians. Upon examining her pulse, I found it rapid yet forceless (*Shu Er Wu Li*). Observing her symptoms, I noted loose stools and diarrhea (*Da Bian Tang Xie*). Inquiring about previous treatments, I learned they had all used heat-clearing and fire-purging prescriptions. However, the more the fire was cleared, the worse the throat pain became. After thorough examination and confirmation, I determined that this was not excess fire (*Shi Huo*), but rather a condition caused by excessive use of cold and cool herbs, leading to abdominal deficiency and coldness, which falls under the category of *Ge Yang* syndrome (True Cold, False Heat). Consequently, I exclusively alternated between *Li Yin Jian* (Reasoning Yin Decoction) and *Da Bu Yuan Jian* (Great Tonification of the Source Decoction). Within half a month, the throat pain subsided; within half a year, the disease was completely cured.
2. The son of the Wang family, just one year old, was playing with an iron nail provided by his mother and accidentally swallowed it into his throat. His father cried out for help in distress. Upon my arrival, I saw the mother holding the child upside down by the feet, hoping the nail would fall out, resulting in bleeding from the mouth and nose, a critically dangerous situation. I advised them, "Is there any way to extract the nail by suspending the child upside down without endangering their life?" I immediately instructed someone to hold the child upright, after which the child began to cry. I stated, "The nail has already passed the pharynx and is in the esophagus/stomach." The father replied, "How can such delicate internal organs withstand this?" Due to his desperate pleading, I reluctantly agreed to try something merely to comfort him, though I had no immediate solution. He repeatedly demanded a prescription in a short time. I sat quietly in my study, thinking deeply, but found no answer. I then picked up the *Ben Cao* (Materia Medica) to read, hoping for inspiration. I saw the entry stating: "Iron fears *Pu Xiao* (Mirabilite)." This gave me an idea. I took one qian of living lodestone (*Ci Shi*) and two qian of *Pu Xiao* (Mirabilite/Glauber's Salt), ground them into powder, and gave it to the father. I instructed him to mix the powder with boiled pork and honey, and have the child swallow it entirely towards the end of the Shen hour (3-5 PM). The next morning, the father crawled before the steps and said, "Yesterday around midnight, I suddenly passed a object, as large as a taro root, clear like cabbage, smooth and edgeless, coated externally by the medicine. Upon inspection, the nail was inside." He showed it to me; it was a mushroom-headed nail used for shoe-making in Beijing. The father asked for the prescription and its rationale. I explained, "I used Mirabilite and Lodestone. Essentially, without Lodestone, Mirabilite cannot make the medicine adhere to the nail; without Mirabilite, Lodestone cannot rapidly expel the nail. Without oil/fat, there is no lubrication; without honey, swallowing might be difficult. Combining these four elements, the adhering agent adheres, the expelling agent expels, the lubricant lubricates, working synergistically to wrap and protect the nail during expulsion." Do you agree? The father bowed and thanked me, saying, "Truly miraculous! It must not be forgotten. It should be recorded to aid future generations' understanding."
