Mr. Xu Yongcheng stated: Toothache accompanied by aversion to cold and fever belongs to the Hand and Foot Yangming Meridians. Loose, broken, or lost teeth belong to the Foot Shaoyin Meridian. Dental erosion, swelling, pain, and bleeding are all caused by Stomach Fire, though sometimes mixed pathogenic factors from various meridians and external causes are involved.
The *Yitong* states: The favored concubine of Prime Minister Wang of the Song Dynasty had a preference for rich and strong flavors. One day, intense Heat erupted, causing gum tissue to swell and protrude, gradually enlarging until the mouth could not close, preventing the intake of even liquids. A physician used one bowl of raw Shengdihuang juice (Rehmanniae Radix Recens Juice) and several pieces of Ya Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina), heated them over fire, allowed the spines to absorb the juice completely, ground them into powder, and applied it to the swollen tissue. It subsided immediately, and she recovered within a few days.
Neiruan Erjian (Two points at the medial malleolus) treats upper toothache; moxa application. Zusanli (ST36) treats upper toothache; moxa 49 cones. Sanjian (LI3) treats lower toothache; moxa 7 cones. One method for all types of toothache: Measure a grass blade along the middle finger to the distal palmar crease. Fold the grass into four parts, discard three, keep one. Use this length to measure from the wrist crease up the arm. Apply moxa 3 cones on the side corresponding to the pain. Cure follows.
Another empirical method: Locate the artery in the temple area near the front hairline. Apply small moxa cones 5 to 7 times on the side of the pain. Highly effective. No need for plasters. If it recurs, re-moxa to eradicate the root cause.
