Sour, warm in nature, non-toxic. The variety produced in Liaodong is of the best quality. It should be lightly roasted and crushed before use.
The *Shennong Bencao Jing* (Divine Farmer's Materia Medica) states that it benefits Qi, treats cough with reverse flow of Qi (coughing and wheezing), emaciation and weakness due to overwork and injury, supplements deficiencies, strengthens Yin, and benefits male essence (Jing).
Invention: Wuweizi (Schisandra Chinensis Fruit) is the primary herb for the Right Kidney Mingmen Gate. The *Shennong Bencao Jing* states it treats cough with reverse flow of Qi, strengthens Yin, and benefits male essence; it is suitable for cases of Heart-Kidney Non-Interaction (Xin Shen Bu Jiao), and enters both the Lung and Kidney meridians. Its sour flavor astringes the Metal (Lung Qi) that has been dispersed by consumption; its warm nature nourishes the Water (Kidney Yin) that is deficient. It generates fluids, stops thirst, benefits Qi, strengthens Yin, and augments Water to anchor Yang. It constricts dilated pupils, calms asthma, and arrests sweating. Added with Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), it treats winter lung-cold cough. Combined with Renshen (Ginseng) and Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber), it treats summer mental fatigue. However, for chronic cough due to deficiency-heat, dispersing methods (diaphoresis) must not be mistakenly used. One must remove the seeds, as they are acrid-warm and assist fire; only the skin and flesh, which are sour-salty, should be used to nourish and transform, and excessive use should be avoided lest the excessive sourness cause closure and stagnation, leading to deficiency-heat. Cough occurring at dusk is caused by floating fire in the Lung; cooling herbs are inappropriate here. Instead, Wuweizi should be used to astringe and descend. However, it is contraindicated when pathogenic Wind is on the exterior, during the initial eruption of smallpox/rashes, in all cases of retained fluid retention, and when there is excess heat in the Lungs.
Named "Peng Lei" in the *Shennong Bencao Jing*.
Sweet, neutral, slightly warm, non-toxic. Soak in wine overnight and stir-fry before use.
The *Shennong Bencao Jing* records that it calms the Five Viscera, benefits Essence and Qi, promotes the growth of Yin, makes one strong-willed, increases strength and fertility, and long-term use keeps the body light and prevents aging.
Invention: Fupenzi (Rubus Chingii Fruit) is the fruit of Peng Lei. The *Shennong Bencao Jing* refers to Peng Lei as the fruit itself. Some claim that Peng Lei refers to the seedling of Fupenzi divided into two parts, which is considered incorrect. Li Gao stated: Fupenzi benefits the Kidneys and reduces urination; after taking it, one should cover the urinal (hence the name "Cover Basin"), referring to its effect of reducing urinary frequency. The *Shennong Bencao Jing* specifically focuses on warming the uterus, making users fertile. The *Bielu* (Record of Famous Physicians) states it benefits Qi, lightens the body, prevents hair whitening, and its sweet-warm blood-nourishing efficacy is similar to Sangshen (Mulberry Fruit). It grows in the mountains of the Qin region; genuine specimens are extremely rare in modern times. Drugstores often substitute it with Rubus Idaeus (Raspberry). To verify authenticity, soak it in wine; if the color turns red, it is genuine; otherwise, it is fake.
