It is the feces of bats, named Yeming Sha (Night-bright Sand).
Salty, neutral, non-toxic. When using Fuyi Hui (Bat Ash), it must be washed clean with Yeming Sha and then roasted for use.
Ben Jing (Divine Farmer's Materia Medica) records that it primarily treats dimness, itching, and pain of the eyes, enhances visual acuity allowing clear night vision, and its feces treat facial carbuncles and swelling, intermittent skin pain, stagnation of blood and Qi in the abdomen, breaks up cold-heat accumulations, and eliminates palpitations due to fright.
Invention: Ben Jing uses Fuyi (Bat) to treat eye dimness, itching, and pain. In modern times, ophthalmologists only use Yeming Sha, rarely using Fuyi. Both are medicines acting on the Blood aspect of the Jueyin Liver Meridian. The feces of Fuyi can break up congealed blood and dissipate accumulations; therefore, it is used for cataracts and blindness, malaria, stranguria and leukorrhea, scrofula, and carbuncles. However, while large consumption of bats benefits humans, those slightly deficient should not use it lightly.
It is the feces of the "Cold Number Bug" (Trogopterus dung), also known as Wulingzhi.
Bitter, sour, cold, slightly toxic. Grind into fine powder, fly with wine to remove sand and stones, and dry in the sun. Raw use breaks blood, while stir-fried use harmonizes blood.
Invention: Wulingzhi comes from a migratory bird found in the Jin region. In spring and summer, its plumage is abundant and majestic; in winter, it appears naked and cries mournfully day and night. Thus, Yang Shi's Danqian Lu calls it the Cold Number Bug. Its feces are named Wulingzhi because they resemble solidified fat and are said to receive the spiritual energy of the Five Elements. Its odor is fishy and foul, and its taste is bitter and sour, severely damaging Stomach Qi. Gangmu states it is sweet and warm, which is likely incorrect. Although it has efficacy in treating eye opacities and epigastric pain, it is suitable only for commoners, not for those accustomed to rich diets. Combined with Puhuang (Polygoni Multiflori Herba), it forms Shixiao San (Laughing Dispersal Powder), treating various pains in the chest, heart, abdomen, hypochondrium, and lower abdomen, as well as postpartum blood stasis, metrorrhagia, and unstable eye opacities. Its nature enters the Liver to disperse blood most rapidly. However, its smell is extremely fishy and repulsive, and those with Spleen-Stomach deficiency cannot tolerate its Qi.
Sweet, neutral, non-toxic.
Invention: Banjiu (Turtledove) tonifies the Kidney, thus enhancing vision, treating deficiency and benefiting Qi. Consuming it prevents dysphagia. Ophthalmic formulas such as Banjiu Wan and Jinjiu Wan use it, taking the Qi and Blood as guides to assist in tonifying the Kidney and improving vision.
Neutral, toxic.
Invention: No prescriptions or medicines currently use it. Its fur treats neonatal tetanus (Jibing), preventing the onset of wind-stroke symptoms. Carrying the fur prevents Jibing. Jibing refers to infants born to pregnant mothers who are breastfeeding; if the infant suffers from illness resembling malaria or dysentery, other infants may subsequently develop abdominal distension, recovering or relapsing later. Other pregnant women nearby may also sequentially contract the disease. People in the North are unfamiliar with this illness.
