[Background Information]
Book: Benjing Fengyuan (Supplement to the Materia Medica)
Author: Zhang Lu
Dynasty: Qing Dynasty
Chapter: Shi (Stones) / ... / Luo (Snails/Conches) (Total 4 sections)
Category: Comprehensive
[Original Text to Process]
Also known as "Turtle Foot" (Guijiao).
Sweet, salty, non-toxic.
Invention (Commentary): Shiluo (Sea Snail) grows on rocks in the southeastern sea. It belongs to the category of mussels and clams, its shape resembles turtle feet, and its shell is similar to that of a sea crab or Tuxi (a type of sea snail). Although it is considered one of the delicacies from the sea, it is slightly inferior to them. However, in terms of its efficacy to promote urination, Tuxi cannot compare with it.
Dancai (Dried Mussel Meat).
Sweet, warm, non-toxic.
Invention (Commentary): Dancai grows in saltwater but does not taste salty. It is an excellent medicine for eliminating goiter (Ying), and also supplements yin deficiency, consumptive fever, and depletion of essence and blood. It treats leukorrhea in women and addresses lumbago and Hongxiang jiao (gouty arthritis/swelling of the lower limbs). It should not be consumed in large quantities or over a long period, as it may cause impotence and hair loss. This applies to all seaweed-like vegetables from the sea, not just Dancai.
Yan (Operculum), also known as Jiaxiang (Shell Fragrance).
Salty, neutral, non-toxic.
Invention (Commentary): The meat of Hailuo (Sea Snail) is sweet and cold; consuming it can stop heart pain. Fresh snail juice applied to wash the eyes relieves pain; if aged for twenty or thirty years, it is even more effective when mixed with Coptis chinensis powder (Huanglian) to drop into the eyes. The operculum has a nature of closure and storage; it can retain fragrance for months without dissipating, but emits a foul odor when burned alone. When combined with Agarwood (Chenxiang), Musk (Shexiang), various flowers, and wax, and then decocted, it is called Jiajian (Shell Ointment), which can be used as lip balm. It was used in the *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold), referred to in the poem by Li Shangyin of the Tang Dynasty: "Agarwood and Shell Ointment serve as courtyard torches." Its shell, colorful and brilliant, is finest when made into ornaments (Dian). After burning, it can be used to drop into the eyes to eliminate old nebulae (cloudy cornea). It is a pity that specialists in ophthalmology rarely know this.
Ji Luosi (River Snail).
Sweet, cold, non-toxic.
Invention (Commentary): Creatures such as snails, mussels, clams, crabs, turtles, and soft-shelled turtles are all hard on the outside and soft on the inside, embodying the image of the Li Fire (Fire trigram in I Ching). Although they dwell in muddy water, their nature is cold, making them most effective for treating toxic heat. Embedding Pearl and Coptis chinensis powder in the flesh for a long time, extracting the juice, and dropping it into the eyes stops heat obstruction and eye pain. Freshly pounded and juiced, mixed with unadulterated wine and drunk, it treats jaundice (Dan) and difficult urination. For river snails, remove the mud, add a small amount of Borneol (Bingpian), bury in soil for one shichen (two hours) until it turns to water, to treat hemorrhoids. Also, pounded and mixed with Musk, applied to the umbilicus to guide damp-heat downward, it treats Jin Kou Li (dysentery with inability to eat). Burned ash of rotten shells from earthen walls applied to smallpox sores and Chuang (sores) with damp-toxin. Those living in fields absorb more earth qi and are larger in shape; those living in water absorb more water qi and are smaller. Their efficacy in treating edema, yellow jaundice, red and swollen painful eyes, hemorrhoidal swelling and prolapse, thirst, and detoxifying alcohol is the same. Those produced in the streams of Huizhou have greenish-blue meat that is lovely; locals bake them dry to offer as local specialties. However, its nature is cold and purgative; excessive consumption causes abdominal pain and diarrhea, which can be relieved by grinding Mugwort wood (Muxiang) in wine.
