[Huluba]
Bitter, greatly warm, non-toxic.
[Invention] Huluba is a phonetic error for the seeds of carrots from overseas. It is a medicine for the Gate of Life (Mingmen) of the right kidney. It is suitable for cases of insufficient primal yang and latent cold qi that prevents the return of yang to its origin. For symptoms such as Xiao Chang Ben Tun (gas rushing from the lower abdomen to the chest), hernia with unilateral swelling, and palpable masses in the lower abdomen resembling eggs that move up and down with unbearable pain, Huluba Wan should be used. For cases where kidney qi does not return to its origin, presenting with heat above and cold below, cold limbs, and vomiting, Hei Xi Dan should be used. Both are often used together with Jin Ling Zi (Szechwan Chinaberry Fruit), one cold and one hot, demonstrating their efficacy in guiding fire back to its source.
[Niubangzi]
Also known as Shu Niu Zi, Niubangzi, and Da Li Zi; these are all alternative names.
Pungent, neutral, non-toxic.
[Invention] Shu Niu Zi is a medicine entering the Lung Meridian. It treats wind-dampness-induced urticaria, wind-heat in the throat, and disperses toxicity from various swellings and sores; it is a miraculous drug for treating smallpox/rashes. If rashes fail to erupt, this herb is ground into powder, mixed with blood from a rooster's comb and fermented rice wine, and taken with Hu Sui Tang (Coriander Decoction) for miraculous effects. For severe toxin accumulation in sores, raw ground application promotes pus discharge; wine-fried, it moves upward, unblocks the twelve meridians, expels wind from the skin, and eliminates rash toxins. However, it is contraindicated for those with qi deficiency, pale complexion, and loose stools.
[Canger]
Ancient name: Canger.
Fruit: Sweet, warm; Leaves: Pungent, bitter, slightly toxic. Use after wine soaking and stir-frying. Avoid pork.
[Invention] Canger treats head wind-brain pain, wind-dampness bi syndrome affecting the whole body, limb spasms, necrotic flesh and dead muscle, skin itching, cold pain in feet and knees, and long-term use can also tonify qi. Long-term consumption of its leaves is effective for dispelling wind-dampness. Patients taking Canger must strictly avoid pork and exposure to wind; violation causes widespread red erysipelas. For women suffering from blood-wind attacking the brain, causing dizziness, suffocation, sudden collapse, and unconsciousness, dried young hearts of Canger grass ground into powder and taken with wine are very effective. This substance excels at connecting the vertex to the brain and traversing the Du Meridian.
[Tianmingjing]
Named Hamalán in the *Shennong Ben Cao Jing*, also known as Disong; its seed is named Heshi.
Sweet, cold, non-toxic.
The *Shennong Ben Cao Jing* states it treats blood stasis, painful abdominal masses threatening life, hematochezia/hematuria (stopping bleeding by promoting discharge), and promotes urination.
[Invention] Tianmingjing’s function specializes in dissipating blood, possessing the ability to break old stasis and generate new blood. Thus, the *Shennong Ben Cao Jing* mentions "promoting discharge to stop bleeding" (referring to stopping bleeding by removing stasis). It can also induce vomiting to expel wind-phlegm, kill parasites, and detoxify. Taken as juice, it stops phlegmatic malaria; gargling stops toothache; applied externally as a paste, it treats snakebites; decocted and drunk, it clears turbid evil toxins, excreted via urine. For tonsillitis/throat swelling and pain, as well as pediatric acute or chronic convulsions with locked jaws and unconsciousness, crushed juice mixed with wine should be forced down the throat. For swollen and blocked throat with obstructive phlegm-saliva, juice applied with a goose feather brush removes phlegm with immediate effect. It is also used to treat swine plague.
