Commonly known as "Poguozhi" (Broken Ancient Paper), this name is a misnomer due to similar pronunciation.
Bitter, pungent, very warm in nature, non-toxic. Use after soaking in salt water and wine, then baking; it is effective when stir-fried with Sesamum indicum L. seeds (Huma). Avoid consuming Brassica rapa var. parachinensis (Youcai/Chinese flowering cabbage), mutton, and various blood products.
[Invention] Poguozhi belongs to Fire. It has the effect of consolidating and calming the spirit (Shen). It allows the fire of the Pericardium (Xinbao) to communicate with the fire of the Gate of Vitality (Mingmen), thereby strengthening the Primordial Yang (Yuanyang) and filling the bone marrow. Its astringent property secures against collapse. Walnut belongs to Water. It moistens dryness and nourishes blood. Since blood belongs to Yin and abhors dryness, oil is used to moisten it. When combined with Poguozhi, it creates the wonderful synergy of Water and Fire generating each other. Therefore, Qing'e Wan (Qing'e Pill) from *Ju Fang* (The Bureau Formulary) uses these two herbs. Sun Simiao stated: "Tonifying the Kidney is not as good as tonifying the Spleen." Xu Xueshi stated: "Tonifying the Spleen is not as good as tonifying the Kidney." When Kidney Qi is weak, Yang Qi becomes deficient and poor, failing to steam and warm the Spleen and Stomach, leading to sensations of fullness and distension and poor appetite. This is like a pot without fire underneath; even if cooked all day, it will not be done. When Yang Qi is deficient, food cannot be digested. Ershen Wan (Two Spirits Pill) from *Jisheng Fang* treats diarrhea caused by deficiency-cold of the Spleen and Kidney. It uses Psoraleae Fructus (Buguzhi/Poguozhi) to tonify the Kidney, Myristicae Semen (Roudoukou/Nutmeg) to tonify the Spleen, adds Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu/Evodia) to calm the Liver, and adds Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang/Wood Fragrance Root) to regulate Qi, allowing the middle Jiao to rotate smoothly. For cases of essence injury with red, scanty, painful urination, remove Muxiang and replace it with Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi/Schisandra Berry). It is frequently effective for soreness and pain in the waist and knees, cold kidneys, and seminal emission. However, it should not be used for those with Yin deficiency and internal heat, nocturnal emissions, hematuria, or constipation.
Jianghuang (Curcuma Longa Rhizome) is pungent, bitter, warm in nature, and non-toxic. Chen Zangqi said: Jianghuang has less pungency and more bitterness; its nature is hot, not cold. Some claim it is extremely cold, which is incorrect. There are two types. Those grown in Shuchuan (Sichuan) are yellow in color, tender in texture, have rootlets, are hollow inside with pores when broken, and are sliced into two pieces, known as Pianzi Jianghuang (Slice-shaped Jianghuang). Those grown in Guang (Guangdong) are coarse in texture, flat in shape resembling dried ginger, and can only be used for dyeing, not for decoctions. Currently, pharmacies mix them up, deceiving people, causing only the harm of depleting Qi without providing therapeutic benefits.
[Invention] Jianghuang, Yujin (Curcuma Aromatica Rhizome), and Ezhu (Curcuma Phaeocaulis Rhizome) have similar shapes and functions. However, Yujin enters the Heart meridian and specifically treats blood disorders of the Pericardium. Jianghuang enters the Spleen meridian and additionally regulates Qi within the Blood. Ezhu enters the Liver meridian and additionally treats Blood stasis within Qi disorders. This is their difference. The ancient formula Sanbi Tang (Three Bi Decoction) uses Pianzi Jianghuang to treat arm pain caused by Wind-Cold-Dampness. Dai Yuanli stated: Pianzi Jianghuang can enter the arm meridians to treat pain, indicating it can regulate Qi within the Blood. It can treat masses (Zhengjia), carbuncles and sores, unblock meridians, and reduce swelling and toxicity. Its potency is stronger than that of Yujin. However, for patients with arm pain due to Blood deficiency, taking it will inevitably worsen the condition.
