[Recorded in the *Bie Lu* as a Lower Grade herb]
In summer, the pulse is at the skin level like a hook; in winter, the pulse is at the bone level like Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi) circulation.
[Flavor and Nature] Sweet, slightly cold, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily harmonizes the Middle Jiao (Spleen and Stomach) and directs rebellious Qi downward.
[Evidence] It is said: Sown in February, vines climb and entangle around fences and walls. Leaves are large as cups, round with pointed tips. Flowers come in purple and white, resembling small moths with wings and tail-like appendages. Pods grow beneath the flowers, with over ten varieties: some long, some round, some resembling dragon or tiger claws, others like pig ears or sickles. Shapes vary greatly, all clustering along branches. After the White Dew solar term, fruits proliferate further; if autumn heat persists, growth becomes difficult. Hence, it is also named "Xue Mei" (Snow Eyebrow) due to shared energetic affinity, and "Liang Yan Dou" (Cool Propagating Bean). Colloquially misnamed "Yang Yan Dou" (Sheep Eye Bean), likely due to shape similarity. When tender, it can serve as vegetables or tea ingredients; when mature, seeds are harvested for boiling and eating. Seeds exist in black, white, red, and mottled colors. For medicinal use, only white seeds are selected. Although pods may be thick, seeds that are coarse and round are superior.
My late father said: Shu (Beans) are among the five grains. Ripening in autumn, they turn white, with sweet fragrance. This embodies the meaning of Earth, Metal, and Water connecting three Zang organs (Spleen, Lung, Kidney). Thus, it is a substance for harmonizing the Middle and directing Qi downward.
It is also said: Moving rightward and descending, it naturally extinguishes summer-heat, eliminates fever, relieves thirst, and stops dysentery.
[Commentary] It is said: "Bian" (Flat/Spread) sounds like "Bian" (All-around/Pervasive), symbolizing the opening of doors. If the pulse is at the skin in summer, hibernating insects prepare to leave, representing the image of broken or open doors. "Bian" also sounds like "Bian" (Pervasive); Jia He (Fine Grain) beans are grains of the Water storage. If the pulse is at the bones in winter, hibernating insects seal their doors, representing the image of a gentleman residing indoors. Referencing *Yong Lei Qian Fang*. To stabilize a fetus on the verge of falling or breaking, the meaning of "broken door" and "opening door" becomes clear without need for verbal description. Transforming炎 (Heat/Fire) into Qing Su (Clear and Dry), turning destruction into peace, requires no verbal description either. If injured by dampness in autumn, this is sudden contraction of Autumn Metal, causing internal dampness retention. One must still follow the seasonal descent, from subtle to manifest, so Lung Qi becomes clear. This is the response to Autumn Qi, the way of nourishing conservation. The *Bie Lu* states it harmonizes the Middle, which means harmonizing the Central Earth of Late Summer. Leveraging the handover between Fire and Earth, Metal and Fire do not punish each other, allowing descent and entry. Entry leads to ascent, ascent leads to outward movement. Five Elements remain balanced, cycles revolve endlessly, which again needs no verbal description.
(Transitioning from Summer to Autumn, transforming Heat into Clear Dryness is akin to igniting fire to create Metal, requiring no separate seed.)
