This refers to the shell of the poppy (Ying Su Ke). It astringes the intestines, consolidates the lungs, and secures the kidneys.
Acidic and astringent in flavor, neutral in nature. It consolidates lung qi, astringes the intestines, and secures the kidneys. It treats chronic cough, diarrhea and dysentery leading to rectal prolapse, seminal emission, and frequent urination, as well as various pains in the heart, abdomen, and bones/tendons. (Li Dongyuan stated: Astringents consolidate Qi and can enter the Kidney channel, thus they are particularly suitable for treating bone diseases.) However, if the acidic astringency is too tight, it may cause vomiting and hiccups. (When processed with vinegar and used concurrently with Renshen [Ginseng Root] and Baizhu [Atractylodes Rhizome], the harm of ingestion can be avoided.) Moreover, it retains stagnation and may instead form chronic diseases. It is contraindicated in the initial stage of diarrhea and dysentery, as well as in coughs caused by wind-cold. (Zhu Danxi stated: This is an astringent medicine; one must first eliminate the root cause of the disease.) Also known as Lichun Flower, it comes in red, yellow, purple, and white colors, and is beautiful and lovely. When using the shell, wash away the stem and fascia, take the thin skin, and stir-fry with vinegar or honey. It works well when combined with vinegar, Wumei [Mume Fruit], and Chenpi [Citrus Reticulata Peel]. (The tender shoots can be eaten as vegetables; they clear heat, moisten dryness, open the stomach, and thicken the intestines. Yumi Ren [Poppy Seed] moistens and treats retrograde vomiting.) Sweet and cold in nature, it moistens dryness. Eating it boiled in porridge treats retrograde vomiting. (Adding Renshen [Ginseng Root] is especially good.)
A Fu Lou (also known as Opium, commonly referred to as Ypian). Astringent in flavor, stops diarrhea and dysentery.
Acidic and astringent in flavor, warm in nature, slightly toxic. It stops diarrhea and dysentery, consolidates rectal prolapse, and astringes essence and Qi.
This is the fluid/sap of the poppy flower. When the poppy forms green capsules, use a large needle to prick the outer green skin three to five times in the afternoon, without damaging the hard inner skin. Early the next morning, the fluid exudes. Scrape it into porcelain vessels with a bamboo knife and dry in the shade. Therefore, the opium currently sold in markets still contains capsule fragments inside. (It is vulgarly used in sexual arts; in the capital, a "Golden Pill" is sold, claiming to cure all diseases, which are merely tricks of quacks and are highly harmful. Do not be deceived.) The above belongs to the category of Millet and Grain.
Tonifies the Kidneys and resolves toxicity.
Sweet and cold in nature, black in color, belongs to Water, and corresponds to the Kidneys. (Beans have five colors, each entering the Five Zang Organs.) Thus, it can tonify the Kidneys and calm the Heart Mind. (When Kidney Water is sufficient, Heart Fire becomes tranquil.) Brightens the eyes. (The divine light of black water belongs to the Kidneys; when Kidney Water is sufficient, vision is bright.) Directs Qi downward and promotes urination. (Ancient formulas often use it alone for treating edema, or add it to other herbs.) Clears heat and dispels wind. (Stir-fry until hot, pour wine over it, and drink the juice to treat severe postpartum wind-stroke and lower back pain during pregnancy; it also releases the exterior. *Qianjin Fang* states: One purpose is to dispel wind, another is to resolve blood stasis.) Invigorates Blood. (Obstetric texts state: Stir-fry until smoke ceases, pour wine over it, and take orally to expel residual blood after childbirth.) Resolves toxicity. (Su Song stated: Ancient texts claim Soybean can resolve the toxicity of all medicines, but testing shows this is not entirely true; adding Gancao [Licorice Root] makes the verification remarkable.) Reduces swelling and relieves pain. Crushed and applied externally, it treats all kinds of swellings and sores. Boiled and eaten, it facilitates bowel movements. Those that are tight and small are better for medicinal use. Boiled in salt water and eaten, it further tonifies the Kidneys. It is incompatible with Wu Shen [Five Ginsengs], Longdan Cao [Gentian Root], and pork. It is contraindicated with Houpo [Magnolia Bark] (using them together moves Qi). It works well when combined with bile, Shimi [Rock Sugar], Muli [Oyster Shell], Xingren [Apricot Seed], and Qianhu [Peucedani Radix]. (For sudden wind-stroke causing aphasia, boil Soybean juice, simmer until thick like malt syrup, hold in the mouth, and drink the juice; for throat obstruction causing aphasia, use the same method.)
