Promotes the circulation of blood.
Sweet and bitter, neutral in nature. Its action is moving and does not stay. (Although it has the "king's command," it cannot remain stationary, hence the name.) It can enter the blood level. Unblocks the blood vessels. It is a herb for the Yangming channel and the Chong and Ren vessels. (The Yangming channel is abundant in qi and blood.) Dispels wind and removes bi-syndrome. Stops bleeding and relieves pain. Promotes urination and defecation, unblocks menstruation. Induces labor and promotes lactation. (For those with abundant qi and stagnant blood, it may be temporarily used to promote movement; otherwise, caution is advised.) Treats metal wounds. (Stops bleeding.) Carbuncles, sores, and ding-sores. (Disperses blood stasis.) Extracts bamboo or wood splinters. Contraindicated for those after hemorrhage, patients with metrorrhagia/metrostaxis, and pregnant women. The flowers resemble bells. The fruits resemble lanterns. The seed shells have five ridges. Harvest the herbs and seeds, steam them, and soak them in fermented rice water.
Dianthus superbus: Promotes urination and breaks blood stasis.
Bitter and cold. Descends heart fire. Promotes small intestine function. Drives out pathogenic heat from the bladder. It is an essential herb for treating lin-syndrome. (If it is postpartum lin-syndrome, it should be used together with Polygoni Multiflori Caulis [Puhuang]. The five types of lin-syndrome generally belong to damp-heat. For heat-lin, Ba Zheng San and herbs like Gardeniae Fructus [Shanzhi] and Talcum [Huashi] are suitable; for blood-lin, Little Thistle and Achyranthes Bidentatae Radix paste are suitable; for kidney-deficiency lin, tonifying the kidney is suitable, and it should not be purged alone; for elderly people with qi deficiency, Ginseng Radix and Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma combined with Akebiae Caulis and Gardeniae Fructus are suitable; there are also cases where phlegm obstruction in the middle jiao causes lin-syndrome, where resolving phlegm combined with promoting urination is suitable, and sweating should not be induced, as inducing sweating will inevitably cause hematuria.] Breaks blood and opens orifices. Resolves carbuncles and reduces swelling. Brightens the eyes and removes nebula. Unblocks menstruation and induces abortion. (Its nature is slippery and tends to descend.) Contraindicated for those with small intestine deficiency. Lest heart heat remains unresolved while the small intestine becomes diseased again. One should seek the root of the disease to attenuate it. The flowers are as large as coins, with red and white spots, very charming. Commonly known as Luoyang flower. Use the stamens and calyx. Paeoniae Moutan Cortex [Danpi] is used as an assistant drug. Incompatible with Sepia Ecria [Piaoxiao]. (For bamboo or wood splinters embedded in flesh, grind Dianthus superbus into powder, take with water using a fangcun bi measure, or boil the juice and drink three times a day.)
Artemisia capillaris: Also known as Bianzhu. Promotes urination and kills parasites.
Bitter and neutral. Promotes urination. Treats jaundice and heat-lin. Kills various parasites. Treats abdominal pain caused by roundworm biting. Treats vaginal erosion in women. (Boil and take.) Scabies and other diseases. (These are all due to the effect of removing damp-heat.) Leaves are thin like bamboo, stems are weak and creeping, nodes are short and powdery. Blooms red flowers in March.
