To promote circulation, dispel wind-heat, tonify the Lung and Kidney, and brighten the eyes.
Sweet, bitter, slightly cold. It possesses the qi of the four seasons. (Sprouts in winter, leaves in spring, flowers and stamens in summer, fruits in autumn.) It is saturated with frost and dew. It absorbs the essence of Metal (Lung) and Water (Kidney). It can benefit the two zang organs of the Lung and Kidney. Thereby restraining Heart Fire and pacifying Liver Wood. When Liver Wood is pacified, wind ceases. When Fire descends, heat is eliminated. Thus, it can nourish the blood of the eyes and remove nebulae (cataracts/opacities). (When used relative to Gouqi Zi [Lycii Fructus], made into honey pills and taken for a long time, eye diseases will never occur.) It treats weeping eyes and dizziness. It disperses damp-bi and wandering wind. Those planted in home gardens, especially those produced in Hangzhou, are of good quality. (Those with small flowers and bitter taste are named Ku Yi [Bitter Chrysanthemum], not true Chrysanthemum. Jing Huan said in *Mushu Xiantan*: True Chrysanthemum prolongs life, wild Chrysanthemum purges the body.) There are yellow and white varieties. The single-petaled ones with sweet taste are used for medicine.
Used with Baizhu [Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma], Gouqi Zi [Lycii Fructus], and Digupi [Lycii Cortex] as assistants.
Qing Ye [Green Leaves of Chrysanthemum]. Rescues critical Ding Du [carbuncles/furuncles]. (Pound the leaves, mix with wine, squeeze out the juice to drink, and apply the residue to the sore; it is miraculous.)
Light, brightens the eyes.
Acrid, warm, light and floating. Its function excels at brightening the eyes and eliminating nebulae. It also treats Tou Feng [headwind/headache due to wind], Hou Bi [sore throat], toothache, and scabies/itching. It is often found after harvesting rice in fields. It grows in low fields where rice rots in water. It forms from the residual qi of the rice. (Grind Gujing Cao [Eriocauli Flos] into powder, take 2 qian with hot noodle soup, to treat persistent epistaxis.)
Also known as Qingxiang Zi [Pharbitidis Semen]. Purges the Liver and brightens the eyes.
Bitter, slightly cold. Dispels wind-heat. Treats all kinds of eye diseases, insect-related scabies, and malignant sores. It can stir up Yang Fire. Do not use if the pupil is dilated.
Resembles a cockscomb but has a long, pointed spike.
Jue Ming Zi [Cassiae Semen] (Purges the Liver and brightens the eyes.)
Sweet, bitter, salty, neutral. Dispels wind-heat. (Making pillows can treat Tou Feng [headwind/headache due to wind].) Treats Qing Mang Nei Zhang [amblyopia/internal cataract], nebulae obscuring vision, redness and swelling of the eye sockets, tearing, and photophobia. Shape like a horse's hoof. Named for its ability to brighten the eyes. Crush before decocting. Leaves can be eaten as vegetables. Benefits the five zang organs. Brightens the eyes.
Light, induces sweating, eliminates eye nebulae.
Sweet, bitter, neutral. Treats eye diseases with tearing upon exposure to wind. Nebulae obscuring vision. (Nebulae are caused by Liver pathogen stagnation and obstruction, preventing upward communication to the eyes.) Removing the nodes allows it to induce sweating.
Hollow and light. It has the function of ascending and dispersing Fire stagnation and wind-dampness. Overuse damages the Liver. (For stiff tongue with bleeding, rinse mouth with Mu Zei [Equiseti Herba] decoction to stop immediately.)
