Clears heat and purges fire, treats eye diseases, astringes to stop dysentery.
Bitter and cold in nature. Green in color and astringent in property. Because it eliminates liver heat and pacifies the Liver Wood (the Liver belongs to Wood), it is therefore used to treat eye diseases. (Effective whether taken internally or washed externally.) For fright convulsions, epilepsy, and various bi-syndromes caused by wind-dampness. Due to its astringent and consolidating properties.
Therefore, it treats metrorrhagia, leukorrhea, and dysentery. The bitter-cold nature clears heat, which is its strength. *Bencao Gangmu* states that long-term use lightens the body, benefits essence, and promotes fertility; this is not necessarily true. It originates from western regions.
The bark
that does not shed is authentic. Current drug merchants bind Northern *Asarum* (Beixixin) with this bark and use *Euphorbia* (Daji) as an adulterant. It is inimical to Evodia Fruit (Wuzhuyu). (For red eyes with corneal opacity: Decoct 1 liang of Qinpi in water, clarify, and wash daily with warm liquid.)
This is the root bark of the stink tree (*Ailanthus altissima*). It astringes the intestines and dries dampness.
Bitterness dries dampness, cold overcomes heat, and astringency consolidates. Enters the Blood level to astringe blood. Eliminates stale phlegm from the Lungs and Stomach. Treats diseases caused by damp-heat. Diarrhea, chronic dysentery, metrorrhagia, leukorrhea, intestinal wind. Nocturnal emission and seminal leakage. Possesses the function of stopping diarrhea and dysentery. (A woman over forty years old drank excessively without restraint and ate much fish and crab, accumulating toxins in the zang-fu organs. She suffered diarrhea twenty to thirty times day and night, with stool mixed with pus and blood, and severe pain in the large intestine extending to the anus. Medications for stopping bloody dysentery were ineffective; medications for intestinal wind made it worse. Generally, intestinal wind involves blood but no pus. Taking hot medicines increased abdominal pain and bleeding; taking cold medicines led to profuse diarrhea and reduced appetite; taking warm and neutral medicines had no effect. After nearly a year on the verge of death, someone advised her to take Renshen San. She took one qian of powdered Chupi Root Bark and Ginseng, taken on an empty stomach with warm wine or rice water, and was cured.) Eliminates childhood malnutrition syndrome (Gan). Due to its bitter-cold nature, it is contraindicated for deficiency-cold constitutions. Those with true yin deficiency of the Kidney must also avoid it, as it is too drying. For dysentery with residual stagnation, do not use hastily. Forcibly astringing will inevitably transform into other syndromes. The leaves have similar functions, though slightly inferior.
Chun Gen Bai Pi (Root Bark of Toon Tree). (Also known as the root bark of Xiangchun / Chinese Toon.) Main uses are similar, but potency is slightly weaker. Roots growing towards the east are superior. Remove the coarse outer bark. Process with vinegar or honey.
Contraindicated with pork and hot noodles. Only used in pills and powders, not in decoctions.
