[Note: The source text provided is a fragmented excerpt from "Bencao Congxin" (Compendium of Materia Medica), specifically covering three herbs: Prunus japonica seed (Yuli Ren), Ligustrum lucidum fruit (Nvzhen Zi), and Acanthopanax senticosus root bark (Wujia Pi). The translation below follows the structure of the provided text, translating each section sequentially.]
**Prunus japonica Seed (Yuli Ren)**
Promotes Qi descent, breaks blood stasis, moistens dryness.
Pungent, bitter, sweet, neutral in nature. Its property is descending. It descends Qi, promotes water metabolism, breaks blood stasis, and moistens dryness. It treats edema, strangury with urgency, stagnation of Qi in the Large Intestine, and obstruction of Guan-Ge (blockage of upper and lower Jiao). When used with wine, it can enter the Gallbladder channel to treat palpitations and inability to close the eyes. (A woman became ill due to great fear; after recovery, she could not close her eyes. Qian Yi said: The eye system connects internally to the Liver and Gallbladder. Fear causes Qi stagnation, causing the Gallbladder Qi to rise horizontally instead of descending. Yuli Ren's moistening property can dissipate stagnation; following the wine into the Gallbladder, the stagnation disperses, the Gallbladder descends, and the eyes close.) After purgation, it may cause depletion of body fluids, making dryness and constipation worse. It is a medicine for treating symptoms and saving emergencies. Those with insufficient body fluids should be cautious and not use it lightly. Soak in hot water, remove skin and pits. Soak in honey, grind into a paste.
**Ligustrum Lucidum Fruit (Nvzhen Zi)**
Tonifies Yin, clears fire.
Sweet, bitter, cool. It is the essence of Shaoyin (Kidney/Heart). It does not wither in deep winter. It benefits the Liver and Kidneys, calms the Five Zang organs, strengthens the waist and knees, brightens the eyes and ears, blackens beard and hair, tonifies wind-deficiency, and cures hundred diseases. (Steep Nvzhen Zi in wine, sun-dry 20 taels; dry Mulberry fruit 10 taels; dried Eclipta herb 10 taels; make honey pills to treat deficiency and various diseases. If mulberry juice is crushed in April and Eclipta juice in July, honey need not be used. Shizhen [Li Shizhen] said: Nvzhen is a superior miraculous medicine, rarely used in ancient formulas. Why?) It is a pure Yin and extremely tranquil substance. Only suitable for those with Yin deficiency and fire. Otherwise, it may cause abdominal pain and diarrhea. Nvzhen and Dongqing are considered two species by Shizhen, but they are actually one thing. (Recently, people raise wax insects on this tree.) Best harvested at Winter Solstice. Steep in wine. (Crush to extract juice, boil into paste, store in clean bottles tightly sealed, bury in the ground for seven days. Use each time to drop into eyes to treat wind...)
**Acanthopanax Senticosus Root Bark (Wujia Pi)**
Disperses [Wind], expels Wind-Dampness, tonifies and strengthens sinews and bones.
Pungent directs Qi and transforms phlegm. Bitter strengthens bones and benefits Essence. Warm dispels Wind and overcomes Dampness. Drives out blood stasis in the skin. Treats spasms and contracture of sinews and bones. (When the Kidney receives nourishment, phlegm and water are eliminated and bones become strong; when the Liver receives nourishment, pathogenic wind is expelled and sinews become strong.) Treats emaciation and five types of flaccidity (flaccidity of sinews and vessels of the Five Zang organs). Impotence and damp scrotum. Women's vaginal itching. Children's weak legs. Brightens eyes and reduces urination. Cures sores and treats hernia. Brewing into wine is especially good. (Wang Lun said: Drinking alcohol for Wind diseases can generate Phlegm-Fire; only Wujia steeped in wine benefits people.) Do not take if there is Fire in the lower part without Wind-Cold-Dampness pathogens, or if there is Liver-Kidney deficiency with Fire. Stem is green. Nodes are white. Flowers are red. Bark is yellow. Roots are black. Corresponds above to the essence of the Five Chariots, hence the name. Fragrant ones with five leaves are best. Polygala root (Yuanzhi) as guide drug. Adverse with Scrophularia root (Yuanshen). Leaves (used as vegetables, remove Wind-Dampness from skin.)
