Astringent, calms fright.
Neutral in nature, calms the heart and stabilizes the spirit. Treats adult epilepsy and manic disorders. Pediatric five frights and twelve types of seizures. (Xu Shuwei stated: The Liver stores the Hun [ethereal soul], which is capable of transformation; when the Hun flies away and becomes unstable, treat with Longchi [Dragon Teeth]. *Weisheng Baojian* states: Longchi stabilizes the Hun, Hu Jing [Tiger Essence] settles the Po [corporeal soul]. Dragon belongs to Wood and governs the Liver, which stores the Hun; Tiger belongs to Metal and governs the Lung, which stores the Po.) Processing methods are the same as for Longgu [Dragon Bone].
Also known as Shan Zha [Pangolin Scales]. Dispersing, unblocks meridians.
Salty and cold. Toxic, possesses strong penetrating properties. (Prefers burrowing through mountains.) Specifically capable of moving Qi and dispersing stagnation, unblocking meridians, and reaching the site of disease. (Wherever the disease is located, use the scales from that area.) Enters the Jueyin [Liver/Pericardium] and Yangming [Stomach/Large Intestine] meridians. (Specifically Liver and Stomach.) Treats wind-damp-cold bi-syndrome [painful obstruction]. Unblocks menstruation and promotes lactation. Reduces swelling and suppurates carbuncles. Relieves pain and drains pus. Harmonizes trauma and promotes eruption of smallpox. Essential medicine for wind-malaria and dermatological conditions. (Because it burrows in mountains and enters water, it can traverse Yin and Yang, penetrate meridians, reach the Ying [Nutritive] level, and break up pathological accumulations; thus used as a guiding herb.) Because it eats ants, it also treats ant-leaks [fistulas resembling ant holes]. (A woman suddenly developed a lump under her neck, extending to the throat. Upon accidental puncture, a bowl of fluid drained out, and the wound failed to heal for a long time. A Daoist priest said: This is an ant-leak, caused by accidentally swallowing ants in food. Use Shan Zha burned until carbonized but retaining its nature, powdered and applied externally; it heals immediately. From *Duoneng Bishi*. For oil barrel leaks, remove the flesh inside the scales and insert them; they automatically move to the leak to seal it. From *Yongzhou Ji*. Do not kill them on dikes, lest their blood enter the soil and cause leakage. These two accounts illustrate its penetrating nature.) Its action is fierce. Dosage should be carefully considered. Contraindicated in ulcerated carbuncles and smallpox with deficiency.
Resembles a Chinese alligator but smaller. Similar to a carp with feet. Tail scales are particularly potent. Used raw or calcined. Processed with butter, vinegar, child's urine, fried in oil, or stir-fried with earth. (For persistent ant-leaks, calcify fourteen Shan Zha into ash, mix with lard and apply. For ants entering the ear, calcify, powder, mix with water, and instill.)
Tonifies Lung, moistens Kidney, stops asthma and cough.
Salty and warm. Tonifies Lung and moistens Stomach. Benefits essence and assists Yang. Treats thirst and difficult urination. Stops asthma and cough. Treats lung abscess with hemoptysis. Suitable for Qi deficiency and blood exhaustion. (Can tonify the Lung and benefit the source of Water. Li Shizhen stated: For tonifying Lung and stopping thirst, its efficacy is similar to Renshen [Ginseng]; for benefiting Qi and supporting emaciation, its efficacy is similar to mutton.) Do not use for coughs caused by external Wind-Cold pathogens. Originates from Guangnan. Head resembles a toad. Back is green. Spots like brocade patterns. Male is Ge [Gejie]. (Mating call is similar, named after the sound.) Skin is rough, mouth is large. Body is small, tail is thick. Female is Jie [Gejie]. Skin is fine, mouth is pointed. Body is large, tail is thin. Males and females call to each other for many days before mating. They embrace in pairs. Catchers pry them apart. Even if dead, they do not separate. Highly effective in sexual techniques. Regardless of gender, only suitable for compound prescriptions. True Gejie holds a small piece in the mouth and does not pant while running. Medicinal power resides in the tail. (When hunted, they bite off their own tails; those with incomplete tails are ineffective.) When preparing, remove head and feet. (Lei Xiao stated: The toxicity is in the eyes, must be removed.) Wash away sand, dirt, meat, and hairs within the scales. Process with butter or honey, or soak in wine and dry. (For asthma, cough, and facial edema, process one pair, 3-5 qian, melt 4 liang of wax, mix to make six cakes. Use one cake, dissolve in thin rice gruel, drink hot.) Above are the Dragon category herbs.
