[Non-toxic, attached to Laver] Aquatic plant.
Kunbu (Laminaria japonica) is the main treatment for twelve types of edema, goiter (thyroid enlargement), and qi stagnation with nodular accumulation. (Recorded by famous physicians above.) [Seedling] (Tao Hongjing stated) Grows in the South Sea; leaves are palm-sized, resembling thin reeds, purple in color, produced in Goryeo. Made into ropes like rolled hemp, yellow-black in color, soft and tough, edible. (Haiyao Bencao states) Grows in the East China Sea water; this grass grows with the current. Those from Silla are yellow-black, with fine leaves; Hu people collect them and twist them into ropes. There is another type of laver that attaches to stones growing on the coast of the South Sea; fresh it is green, dried it becomes purple, and also has medicinal efficacy for treating diseases, thus appended here. [Origin] (Tujing says) Grows in the East China Sea; now also produced in Dengzhou and Laizhou prefectures. (Tao Hongjing said) Produced in Goryeo and the South Sea where it grows. [Season] (Growth) No fixed time; (Harvest) No fixed time. [Storage] Dried in shade. [Medicinal Part] Leaf. [Texture] Similar to laver but flat and thick. [Color] Purple-red. [Taste] Salty. [Nature] Cold, soft. [Qi and Flavor] Flavor stronger than Qi, Yin. [Odor] Fishy. [Main Action] Dissipates scrofula, breaks down hard swellings. [Processing] (Lei Gong said) When used, first boil together with a broken steamer basket to remove the salty taste, then bake and finely chop. For every jin (approx. 500g) processed, use ten steamer baskets of various sizes, finely chop together with Kunbu, place in two separate locations in flowing water from the East, boil from Si hour (9-11 AM) to Hai hour (9-11 PM), adding water as needed so it does not run dry. [Therapeutic Effect] (Treatment) (Yaoxing Lun says) Promotes urination, removes facial swelling, and treats malignant sores and scrofula. (Chen Zangqi said) Hold in mouth and swallow the juice. ○ Laver tastes sweet and is cold; it mainly clears heat and irritability. Excessive consumption causes abdominal pain, qi stagnation, and vomiting of white foam; drinking a small amount of hot vinegar can resolve it. [Combined Treatment] Crush into powder, soak in vinegar, hold in mouth, and swallow saliva to treat goiter qi, tubercles, scrofula, and hard swellings. [Long-term Use Contraindication] Also cannot be taken by emaciated persons and pregnant women.
[Non-toxic, attached to Stephania tetrandra] Vining plant.
Fangji (from Shennong Benjing) mainly treats wind-cold, warm malaria, heat qi, and various epilepsy syndromes; expels pathogenic factors, promotes urination and defecation. (Red text above from Shennong Benjing) Treats edema, wind swelling, removes bladder heat, treats chills and fever due to cold damage, evil qi, stroke causing limb stiffness and spasms, stops diarrhea, dissipates carbuncles, malignant accumulations, and various tinea, ringworm, and insect sores; opens interstices, promotes orifice patency. (Black text above recorded by famous physicians) [Name] Li Jie. [Seedling] (Tujing says) Those from Hanzhong have small seedlings and leaves resembling Ipomoea batatas; stems are very tender. Blowing into one end of a broken stem allows air to pass through like Mu Tong; cross-section shows patterns like wheel spokes, yellow, solid, and fragrant. Those from other places are pale green-white, hollow and soft, with a fishy odor, wrinkled skin, and named Mu Fangji with 'Ding Zu' (nipple-like projections); these are unusable. [Origin] (Tujing says) Grows in Xinghua Jun, Qianzhong, Yidu, Jianping, Huazhou. (Authentic origin: Hanzhong is superior.)
