[Non-toxic]
Bombyx Batryticatus (Silkworm Cocoon) mainly treats carbuncles and swellings without heads. When burned to ash and taken with wine, it will break open the next day. It also treats various gan ulcers, hematochezia, stranguria with blood, and metrorrhagia. Drinking its decoction stops polydipsia (Xiao Ke), regurgitation, and expels roundworms.
(Compendium of Materia Medica)
[Name] Jian Weng (Cocoon Jar)
[Origin] Found everywhere.
[Season] Grows in April and May; harvested in May.
[Medicinal Part] Cocoons from which moths have emerged.
(Tao Hongjing stated that Bombyx Batryticatus should be used with Atractylodis Rhizoma.)
[Texture] Egg-shaped, hollow, as thin as paper.
[Color] White-yellow.
[Taste] Sweet.
[Nature] Warm.
[Efficacy] (Li Shizhen said) Bombyx Batryticatus is widely used in formularies, yet omitted by various materia medica texts, which is a deficiency. In recent times, it has been used to treat carbuncles and furuncles as a substitute for acupuncture needles: one cocoon produces one head, two cocoons produce two heads, with miraculous efficacy. Its decoction treats polydipsia, highly praised in ancient formulas. (Zhu Danxi said) This substance belongs to Fire but possesses Yin functions; it can drain the Ministerial Fire in the Bladder and guide Clear Qi to ascend to the mouth, thus stopping thirst. The efficacy of silk-reeling soup and boiled silk floss is identical. Additionally, Yellow Silk Gauze can tonify the Pa (Bladder), and Brocade Ash stops bleeding, both seen in the Insects and Fish section of this volume.
[Combined Treatments] (Chen Wenxiao's Pediatric Formula) For treating impetigo-like erosion of smallpox with continuous pus, use cocoons from which silkworm moths have emerged, fill them with raw Alum powder, calcine until dry, grind into powder, and apply externally with great effect. ○ (Another Formula) For treating sores on the mouth and tongue, take five Bombyx Batryticatus, wrap them with Peng Sha (Borax), roast over charcoal on a tile until charred, grind into powder, and apply. ○ (Hui Ji Fang) For treating regurgitation with vomiting of roundworms and food, boil ten Bombyx Batryticatus in water, cook three eggs in the liquid, consume, and wash down with unfermented wine, twice daily, with miraculous effect. Alternatively, cook millet porridge with silk-reeling soup and eat. ○ (Sheng Hui Fang) For treating hematochezia and hematuria, metrorrhagia, painful stranguria with blood in women, and wind-intestinal bleeding, use Huang Can Tui Zhi (Yellow Silkworm Molt Paper) calcined to retain its nature, Wan Can Sha (Late Silkworm Sand), Bai Jiang Can (White Stiff Silkworm) stir-fried, ground equally into powder, add a little Moschus, take 2 qian per dose, washed down with rice drink, three times daily, with great effect. Named Jie Huang San.
[Non-toxic]
