[Yinyanghuo]
Also known as Xianlingpi.
Tonifies the Kidney and Mingmen (the gate of vitality, root of Yuan Qi).
Pungent, aromatic, sweet, and warm in nature. Enters the Liver and Kidney meridians. Tonifies the fire of Mingmen, benefits essence and Qi, strengthens sinews and bones, and promotes urination.
Treats impotence, female infertility due to Yin-cold, wind-cold asthenic syndrome, and numbness of the four limbs (hypoesthesia or anesthesia of hands and feet).
Also named Xianlingpi. In the north, there are sheep; it is said that one day a sheep ate a plant called "Baihe," but actually consumed the leaves of this herb, hence the name. Remove the branches before use, stir-fry with sheep fat. Use Yam (Shanyao) as an guiding herb.
Processing with wine yields better results.
[Shechuangzi]
Tonifies the Kidney and Mingmen, dispels wind-dampness.
Bitter, pungent, and warm in nature. Strengthens Yang and benefits Yin, tonifies the Kidney and dispels cold, expels wind and dries dampness.
Treats flaccidity syndromes with scrotal dampness, pain and itching of the female vulva (caused by parasites from dampness, wash with decoction of Alum), deficiency-cold of the uterus, laxity of the vaginal opening (apply hot compress after stir-frying), and diseases of the Kidney and Mingmen. Also treats soreness of the waist and body pain, leukorrhea, rectal prolapse, throat obstruction, toothache, wet tinea and malignant sores (kills parasites and relieves itching), and various wind-dampness disorders. Decoct for bathing to relieve wind-induced itching. (Li Shizhen stated: This is a herb for regulating the Qi aspect of the Kidney, Mingmen, and Sanjiao. It benefits not only men but also women. Why do people discard this herb and seek tonics from distant regions? Is this not valuing hearsay over visible reality?).
Resembles Fennel but finer. Its properties are subtle; if processed to kill toxins, it should not be too pungent (steaming three times with juice of Rehmannia Root is excellent). Adverse with Moutan Cortex, Fritillaria Bulb, and Croton Seed.
[Tusizi]
Gently tonifies the Foot-Yin meridians (Spleen, Liver, Kidney).
Sweet, pungent, and neutral in nature. Condenses pure Yang Qi, enters the Foot-Yin meridians. Strengthens Yin and benefits essence, warms without being drying, and does not assist Ministerial Fire.
Treats five emaciations and seven injuries, cold sperm with dribbling, bitter taste and dry thirst (due to Spleen deficiency and Kidney dryness generating internal heat, Tusizi benefits Yin and clears heat). Expels wind and brightens the eyes, tonifies Wei Qi, assists sinews and vessels, boosts Qi and strength, and makes the body robust (effects of tonifying Liver and Kidney. *Notes from Old Studies* records: My clan brother took Tusizi for several years when young, his food intake doubled, and his blood and Qi became abundant. Suddenly, after bathing, his back swelled, and upon observation, the swelling grew rapidly, becoming a large carbuncle. Coincidentally, Honeysuckle was in bloom; he drank several jin of its decoction, and the swelling subsided. This shows that even excessive consumption of Tusizi can cause carbuncles; thus, one must beware of mineral drugs. Note by Wang Ang: This person may have been infected by other pathogens; it cannot be entirely blamed on Tusizi).
Rootless, creeping over grass and trees. Seeds are yellow like millet grains. Processing with wine yields better results. Wash away mud and sand, soak in wine overnight, sun-dry, and grind into powder. Use Yam (Shanyao) as a guiding herb.
