Lülu (Veratrum nigrum): The flavor is pungent and cold, and it is toxic. It treats gu poison (poison caused by parasites or toxins), cough with reverse flow of qi (coughing with upward rushing of qi), diarrhea and dysentery, intestinal discharge (dysentery with pus and blood), head sores, scabies and itching, malignant sores, kills various insect poisons, and removes dead flesh.
(Lülu, also known as Shancong (Mountain Scallion), is found in valleys everywhere. The lower part of the stem is hairy. Seedlings emerge in March, about five to six cun high. The stem resembles that of a scallion. The root is greenish-purple, wrapped externally by black skin covering the stem, resembling a palm tree. The root is about four to five cun long, yellowish-white.)
Lülu has a pungent and cold flavor. Its root is yellowish-white with a black outer skin, inheriting the qi transformation of the mutual generation of Earth, Metal, and Water. When Earth qi circulates and operates, it can treat gu poison. When Metal qi spreads in all directions, it can treat diarrhea, dysentery, and intestinal discharge. Treating head sores and scabies is due to Metal restraining Wind. Treating malignant sores is because Earth and Water overcome dampness and resolve toxicity. Since Earth governs muscles, it can also remove dead flesh.
Xuanfu Hua (Inulae Flos): The flavor is salty and warm, with slight toxicity. It treats constrained qi, fullness under the hypochondrium, palpitations and fright, eliminates water retention, removes cold and heat between the five zang organs, tonifies the middle jiao, and directs qi downward.
(Xuanfu Hua was named Jinfeicao (Golden Boiling Grass) in the *Shennong Bencao Jing* and Daogeng (Stealing Geng) in the *Erya*. It is common near roadsides, often growing by water or in low-lying wetlands. Seedlings emerge after February, one to two chi high. The stem is soft and thin, leaves resemble willow leaves. Flowers bloom from June to July-August, resembling Golden Coin Chrysanthemum, pale yellow, with fine white down clustered in the center. The flower is round and hangs downward, hence the name Xuanfu (Rotating Cover). It is said that dew drops from the leaves falling to the ground can sprout new plants, making it luxuriant.)
The flower is called Xuanfu because it is round and covers downward. The herb is called Jinfei because it obtains the essence of water and dew, clearing the boiling heat of Lung Metal. It is also called Daogeng because at the time of blooming, it "steals" the qi of Geng Metal. The flavor is salty and warm, with slight toxicity. It likely inherits the qi transformation of Taiyang (Greater Yang). Taiyang qi enters and exits through the chest and hypochondrium; therefore, it treats constrained qi in the chest and fullness under the hypochondrium. Taiyang qi ascends and covers downward, thus treating palpitations and fright. As Taiyang is the master qi of all yang qi, when qi transforms, water moves, thus eliminating water retention. The five zang organs are like the Five Movements operating on the earth; when heavenly qi rotates and covers within the earth, the cold and heat between the five zang organs naturally disappear. By removing cold and heat between the five zang organs, it tonifies the middle. By treating constrained qi, hypochondriac fullness, palpitations, and eliminating water, it directs qi downward.
