Primarily breaks up stagnant Qi, (Bencao Xingbao) drains damp-heat from the Heart, Small Intestine, and Bladder, benefits orifices, and promotes water metabolism. (Bencao Gangmu, Appendix.)
Taste is sweet, nature is neutral, non-toxic. Primarily wards off inauspicious influences, treats wind-dizziness, wind-deficiency, five exhaustions, dry mouth, stops palpitations and fright, alleviates excessive anger and forgetfulness, opens the mind and benefits intelligence, calms the soul and spirit, and nourishes the spirit. (Mingyi Bie Lu, Appendix.)
(The part separated from the main body of the pine tree, not attached to the roots, is called Fuling [Poria]. The part that does not detach from the main body and clings to the roots is called Fushen [Poria with Hosta Root]. Although divided into two types, they are generally treated as...)
Primarily treats edema and abdominal distension, benefits the water passages, and opens the interstices. (Bencao Gangmu, Appendix.)
Primarily treats hemiplegia due to wind, facial paralysis, tendon spasms caused by toxic wind, aphasia, mental restlessness and twitching, and forgetfulness due to deficiency. (Bencao Xingbao, Appendix.)
(This refers to the woody core inside Fushen, also known as Huangsongjie [Yellow Pine Joint].)
(I hold that: the peel and wood of Fuling, collected and used by later generations, each have their specific indications; however, they are merely dregs without essence, lacking vital Qi, and are unworthy of being listed among superior medicines...)
Taste is bitter, nature is slightly cold, non-toxic. Primarily treats cold and heat sensations in the tendons and bones, spasticity due to damp-bi, brightens the eyes, strengthens teeth, benefits the nine orifices, and expels white parasites. Long-term use leads to a light body and longevity; Xiaojingshi [Fructus Viticis Exiguae] has equivalent efficacy.
(Manjing grows near water bodies. Its seedling is over one zhang high, with stems thin and weak like vines, hence the name Manjing. Leaves appear in spring and flourish in summer; flowers bloom in June, pale red; fruits mature in September, black-spotted, size similar to Wutong seeds but light and spongy. There is another arboreal variety whose branches and stems are firm and sturdy, growing in clusters rather than as vines, named Mujing [Vitex negundo], bearing fruits the size of sesame seeds, also known as Xiaojingshi.)
Manjing mostly grows near water. Its seeds are black, with a bitter and cold taste, inheriting the Qi transformation of Taiyang Cold Water. Since Taiyang's root is cold and its branch is hot, while Shaoyin's root is hot and its branch is cold, treating cold and heat in the tendons and bones addresses the diseases of Taiyang (governing tendons) and Shaoyin (governing bones). Damp-bi and spasticity result from dampness injuring the tendons and bones. By enriching the essence of Water, it brightens the eyes. By supplementing the marrow, it strengthens the teeth. The nine orifices are where Qi of Water flows; when Water essence is sufficient, the nine orifices benefit. Parasites belong to Yin; since Taiyang possesses Branch Yang Qi, it expels white parasites. Long-term use strengthens tendons and bones, leading to a light body and longevity. "Xiaojingshi is equivalent" means that besides Manjing, there exists another plant called Xiaojing, whose fruit has equal efficacy to Manjing's fruit and can be used together.
