[Longgu (Dragon Bone)]
Taste and nature: Sweet, neutral. Non-toxic. Indications: Treats "Gui Zhu" (diseases caused by evil qi wandering in the body, resembling possession) in the heart and abdomen, afflictions by spirits or demons, cough with reverse flow of Qi (Ke Ni), dysentery with pus and blood, leukorrhea or metrorrhagia in women (Lou Xia), hard masses in the abdomen (Zheng Jia), and pediatric convulsive epilepsy due to heat pathogen.
(Dragon bones are found in the valleys and mountain rocks of Jin region, as well as in soil burrows near water banks; they are also present in the mountain caves and shores of Liangzhou, Yizhou, Bazhong, and Hedong commanderies. There are male and female bones: those that are fine with broad striations are female; those that are coarse with narrow striations are male. For medicinal use, select those with all five colors present, a white base, and fragmented patterns. The best quality is light, void-textured, and sticky when licked. Yellowish-white is secondary, and black is inferior. If the texture is white and heavy with non-fine patterns, it is called "Shi Longgu" (Stone Dragon Bone) and is unsuitable for medicine. Additionally, teeth and horns have efficacy equal to dragon bone.)
Among the 360 species of scaled creatures, the dragon is the leader. It has 81 scales on its back, corresponding to the number of 9x9, and aligns with the Seven Mansions of the East. It embodies the essence of winter hibernation and storage, rising from the springs below to the heavens. Thus, it is a herb that moves from Yin to Yang, ascending from below. It treats Gui Zhu and spirit afflictions in the heart and abdomen because the Qi of water ascends to interact with Yang, harmonizing the heart and abdomen, thereby eliminating the Yin-type pathogens like ghosts and demons. Cough with reverse flow occurs due to the failure of Heaven's Qi (Lung Qi) to descend. Dysentery with pus and blood results from the failure of Earth Qi (Spleen/Stomach Qi) to store. Metrorrhagia in women is due to the failure of Water Qi (Kidney Qi) to ascend. Longgu opens the Water Essence from the springs, allowing it to rise from the earth to the heavens, facilitating the intersection of Yin and Yang and harmony between upper and lower. Therefore, it treats cough, dysentery, and bleeding. When Earth Qi stores internally, abdominal masses resolve naturally; when Water Qi ascends, pediatric heat-induced convulsions dissipate. The text does not mention long-term use, likely due to textual omission.
[Lurong (Deer Antler Velvet)]
Taste and nature: Sweet, warm. Non-toxic. Indications: Treats metrorrhagia with foul blood, alternating chills and fever, convulsive epilepsy, tonifies Qi, strengthens willpower/memory, promotes tooth growth, and prevents aging. (The *Shennong Bencao Jing* listed Baijiao in the Superior Grade and Lurong in the Medium Grade; now both are classified in the Superior Grade.)
(Deer inhabit mountains and forests, gestating for six months before giving birth. They prefer eating turtles and can distinguish good herbs. When lying down, their mouth and nose face the Weilu point (DU-4) to connect with the Du Meridian. Among blood-containing organisms, flesh grows easiest, tendons second, and bones hardest. Humans do not achieve solid marrow until age twenty. However, deer antlers harden from growth to maturity in less than two months, with large ones weighing over twenty jin, growing several liang per day. No bone grows faster, so it can tonify bone blood and benefit essence and marrow. Furthermore, the head is the meeting place of all Yang meridians, and essence gathers in the velvet, thus assisting Yang. One must use Deer Antler Velvet specifically; currently, elk antlers are used interchangeably, which requires distinction.)
Deer nature is purely Yang, and its Qi connects with the Du Meridian. The velvet is the surplus of bone essence, emerging from Yin to the crown. Its taste is sweet and warm, embodying the generation of Fire generating Earth. It treats metrorrhagia with foul blood because deficiency-cold of Earth Qi causes foul blood to leak. Lurong inherits Fire Qi to warm Earth, moving from Yin to Yang, lifting sunken Qi, thus stopping the leakage. Alternating chills and fever occur because the Heart is the Supreme Yang within Yang; deficiency of Yang leads to chills and fever. The Heart is the Sovereign and houses the Shen (Spirit); deficiency of Shen leads to fright and epilepsy. As Lurong's Yang energy gradually increases, the Heart Spirit becomes sufficient, resolving chills, fever, fright, and epilepsy. Tonifying Qi and strengthening willpower refers to supplementing Kidney Qi and reinforcing the Will (Zhi) stored in the Kidneys. Promoting tooth growth and preventing aging occurs because teeth are the surplus of bones; tonifying according to similarity replenishes Kidney Essence daily, thus preventing aging.
