Sweet in taste, cold in nature. Resolves heat from alcohol. Treats nasal congestion caused by Shanghan (Cold Damage). Also treats various heat sensations and facial flushing after drinking alcohol. When mixed with clam powder and applied externally, it immediately cures prickly heat sores occurring in summer as well as redness and swelling in the axilla.
Sweet in taste, cold in nature. Treats epidemic febrile diseases. Suitable for decocting medicines that treat fire-toxin in Shanghan. It is effective when smeared to treat prickly heat. (Spring snow has no medicinal value and spoils easily.)
Sweet in taste, cold in nature. It is the essence of the Taiyin (Lung) channel. Water at its extreme resembles earth; transforming from soft to hard. This is what is meant by "when things reach an extreme, they undergo transformation into their opposite." For patients suffering from coma due to severe heat from Yang-toxin in Shanghan, placing a piece on the Shanzhong (CV17) acupoint is beneficial. It resolves the toxicity of distilled spirits. All the above belong to Tian-shui (Heavenly Water, referring to natural precipitation like rain, snow, frost, and dew).
Sweet in taste, neutral in nature. Suitable for decocting medicines that regulate the Spleen and Stomach and eliminate damp-heat. Rainwater falling to the ground is called Liao-shui. Also known as water without a source.
Sweet in taste, slightly cold. Treats ghost spasm, mania, and evil toxic pathogens. Used to wash various sores. Eliminates gu-poison. Kills ethereal spirits causing trance and delirious speech. Administer orally to the patient without letting them know it is water. Water collected between locust trees treats various wind-pathogens and malignant sores, wind-rash, and scabies itching. Also named Shangchi-shui. This refers to water collected at the top of bamboo fences and in hollow tree holes. The *Zhan Guo Ce* records: Changsang Jun gave Bian Que water from Shangchi, which is also known as Ban-tian-he water.
Water from a flowing stream stirred ten thousand times with a ladle. Also called Lao-shui. Its original nature is salty and heavy; through stirring, it becomes sweet and light. Used to decoct medicines for treating Shanghan and fatigue injuries. Its purpose is to avoid assisting Kidney Qi while benefiting the Spleen and Stomach.
The medicinal property moves rapidly downward. Suitable for decocting medicines that unblock the two bowels and treat wind-bi (painful obstruction).
Due to its upward-reversing nature. Suitable for decocting medicines that induce vomiting to expel phlegm-fluids in cases of stroke and sudden syncope.
Freshly drawn well-water is beneficial for treating illnesses. Suitable for decocting Yin-nourishing medicines and medicines for Qi, Blood, Phlegm, and Fire.
Sweet in taste, neutral in nature. Treats heart and abdominal pain, Zhu-wu (fixed-point pain), Ghost-Qi, and evil filth. Also treats regurgitation and cholera-like disorder. (Also named Gan-quan/Sweet Spring).
Sweet in taste, neutral in nature. Consumption promotes longevity. Moistens the body and prevents hair whitening. (At Mount Hua, Jade Water flows down; locals who consume it daily often achieve long life.)
Sweet in taste, warm in nature. Long-term consumption makes the body robust and healthy. Its efficacy is similar to that of Zhuru (Stalactite). It is water flowing from areas near stalactite caves.
Pungent in taste, hot in nature, slightly toxic. Treats various wind-pathogens causing tendon contraction, muscle and skin numbness/paralysis, inability to move hands and feet, and skin/joint diseases such as scabies and tinea. Self-heals after bathing. (Hu Renyu in *Yin Conghua* states: Hot springs often have a sulfur smell, and the heat penetrates the skin during bathing. Only the Zhusha Spring on Mount Huangshan in Xin'an has slightly red water in spring that is drinkable; the Li Mountain spring in Chang'an is limestone-based and does not produce much vapor. Although the Zhusha Spring is red, it is not hot, likely due to realgar. Springs near arsenic stones are also hot springs but are toxic for bathing. Only those with strong constitutions should bathe in hot spring water.)
