Liangtoujian (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix), sweet in flavor, warm in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Spleen, Stomach, and Large Intestine meridians. It is particularly effective in descending Qi and digesting food, and especially capable of resolving masses and accumulations (Zhijia, abdominal masses).
Contemporary people mistakenly identify mouse feces as Liangtoujian. Who would have thought that this is a herbal medicine growing in the Longyou region? Local people use it to treat infant food stagnation with miraculous effects. Its wonder lies in its ability to attack hard accumulations without depleting healthy Qi.
Liangtoujian is most divine in treating Pi syndrome (abdominal fullness and masses). When I was in Tongwei, I personally saw this herb. Its root closely resembles Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong), but has a slightly reddish hue and a fragrant aroma. According to the "County Gazetteer," it is recorded there. This proves that Liangtoujian is not mouse feces.
Zhemu (Celtis Sinensis Stem), also known as Zuomu (Quercus variabilis Stem), is bitter in flavor and neutral in nature. It is best at eliminating alcohol toxicity; adding just one branch of Zhemu to a jar of fine wine will turn it into water. It is particularly capable of opening the symphysis pubis during childbirth. Taken together with Renshen (Ginseng Root), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), the bones will crackle shortly after ingestion, the birth canal will open wide, and the baby will descend accordingly. This substance must only be used when the fetal head is at the edge of the birth canal; otherwise, opening the symphysis pubis prematurely may lead to unforeseen complications.
The branches of Zhemu are particularly divine in opening the symphysis pubis. Upon swallowing, it opens immediately without needing an hour; I have personally tested it and achieved efficacy. However, after taking the medicine, the mother must sleep peacefully, so that the bones open easily. In the Sanwu region, during labor, women are often taught to walk around the room. Walking makes the bones firm, making them harder to open; this is not due to the ineffectiveness of Zhemu.
Some might ask: Since Zhemu branches are divine medicines for opening the symphysis pubis, once opened, the baby should be easy to deliver, so why strictly warn about waiting for the fetal head to reach the entrance? The reason is that the pathology of difficult labor is not the failure of the symphysis pubis to open, but rather that the fetus has not turned, so the fetal head definitely does not reach the entrance. Childbirth requires the fetus to turn first before delivery can occur; if the fetus does not turn, delivery will not happen immediately. If the birth canal opens while the fetus is unwilling to be born, wind pathogens can easily enter. Once wind enters, not only will the mother fall ill instantly, but unexpected changes will surely occur, either causing Jingfeng (convulsive disease) at the umbilicus at birth or postpartum convulsions. Therefore, one must confirm that the fetal head has reached the entrance before using Zhemu to open the passage, thus celebrating the safe delivery and avoiding subsequent complications.
