Tai Fa (Fetal Hair) is the tender sprout of blood. For the elderly, obtaining it greatly tonifies decline and depletion. As for Xue Yu (Human Hair), its effect on nourishing Yin is very swift; for various bleeding disorders, taking it stops bleeding immediately. The other effects recorded in *Ben Jing* (Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica) have not been seen to be effective. In all cases, it must be washed clean, burned to ash while retaining its nature, and taken mixed with decoctions. Since hair tastes bitter and has a warm nature, it benefits without harm, thus it is used as an ingredient for stopping bleeding and saving emergencies.
Tong Bian (Child Urine) has a cool nature and is non-toxic. Those that are clear and transparent are of good quality. It dispels consumption fever and cough, stops epistaxis and hematemesis, treats traumatic injuries, and cures postpartum敗血 (retained blood attacking the heart). It can also treat difficult labor, retained placenta, snake bites, and dog bites.
Qiu Shi (Autumn Salt) is refined from Tong Bian through boiling and evaporation methods. It is beneficial regardless of gender. It nourishes Kidney Water, restores one's original state, nourishes the Dantian, returns to the root and restores life, harmonizes the Five Zang organs, moistens the San Jiao (Triple Burner), eliminates thick phlegm caused by rebellious Qi, and dissipates bone-stealing pathogenic heat. It can be used for hard accumulations and masses, and can replace salt for those suffering from abdominal distension (Gu Zhang). It brightens the eyes, clears the Heart, prolongs life, and promotes longevity. These two substances are truly excellent for treating diseases, embodying the saying that "the foul and rotten produce the miraculous." However, Qiu Shi can be used in larger doses, whereas Tong Bian should not be swallowed in large amounts.
Someone asked: "Tong Bian is miraculous for treating hematemesis; can it be taken long-term?" The answer is: "Tong Bian can be drunk temporarily but not for a long time. Although it is said that those who take cold-cooling herbs rarely survive, those who take Tong Bian rarely die. However, since Tong Bian is cool in nature, excessive use inevitably damages the Stomach Qi."
Someone asked: "When refining Qiu Shi from Tong Bian, which method is better? The refinement of Qiu Shi differs by Yin and Yang methods; the Yin-refined version is considered the best. But the Yin-refined version has a foul odor, unlike the Yang-refined version which lacks this odor. However, if the Yin method is practiced correctly, it actually does not smell. I have a method passed down through generations: Take Tong Bian from children under fifteen years old. For every bucket of urine, mix it with two buckets of water, place it in a vat, cover the top with clean cloth, and support the cloth with a bamboo frame so it does not sink to the bottom. Leave it exposed overnight. Take the cloth and dry it in the scorching sun; frost will form on the cloth. Sweep it off with a goose feather, and you have Qiu Shi. The cloth must float on the surface of the urine, not sink completely; it should be wet but not dry. One bucket of urine yields two taels of Qiu Shi. When urine meets water, its nature tends to rise, and the water completely dissolves the foul odor. This is not a transmission from an extraordinary person; how else could such a unique method be obtained? Any Tong Bian accumulated for ten days can be used. Only well water must have its 'frost' collected within one day; otherwise, it becomes useless."
Someone asked: "Some people drink their own urine, called Fan Yuan Tang (Reverse Origin Decoction); is it also beneficial?" The answer is: "In cases of hematemesis, the Qi must be rebellious. Using Fan Yuan Tang uses rebellion to calm rebellion, which is effective. If there has been no blood loss, and the Qi originally has no rebellious symptoms, taking it may instead induce rebellion. Thus, its effect is truly different from that of Tong Bian."
