Use after honey-frying. *Adenophorae Radix* (Ziwan) acts as a guiding herb for *Dodecatemi Flos* (Donghua). It is incompatible with *Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix* (Tianxiong), *Dianthi Herba* (Qumai), *Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma et Radix* (Gaben), *Polypori Umbellati Sclerotium* (Leiwan), and *Polygalae Radix* (Yuanzhi); it fears *Artemisiae Scopariae Herba* (Yinchen).
Bitter in taste, warm in nature, non-toxic. It eliminates phlegm, relieves thirst, moistens the Lung, and directs rebellious Qi downward. It is a sacred medicine for treating cough with phlegm and blood consumption (Xuelao), and a miraculous elixir for coughing up pus and blood. For conditions such as fright epilepsy, asthma, and palpitations, its efficacy is akin to the Daoist path.
It grows everywhere. Harvested in spring. In March, seedlings emerge on the ground; leaves grow in pairs or quaternions. In May and June, yellow, white, or purple flowers bloom, bearing black seeds.
The root resembles that of *Plantaginis Semen* (Cheqian) or *Inulae Radix* (Xuanfu); some are adulterated by dyeing with red earth, which must be known.
For chronic cough unrelieved, combine with powdered *Dodecatemi Flos* (Donghua) and *Stemonae Radix* (Baibu), taken with decoction of fresh ginger and *Mume Fructus* (Wumei). (Verified Formula 1.)
For Lung injury causing cough, decoct in water and take orally. (Formula 2.)
For infants whose cough produces no sound, combine with *Prunus Armeniacae Semen* (Xingren) to make honey pills, taken with *Schisandrae Fructus* (Wuweizi) decoction. (Formula 3.)
For postpartum bleeding, administer powder mixed with water. (Formula 4.)
For strangling throat wind (Chanhou Feng) causing obstruction, insert one stalk of *Adenophorae Radix* into the throat to induce expectoration of saliva; the condition resolves. Then swallow *Natrii Sulfas Crystallizatus* (Mayaxiao) dissolved in saliva. (Formula 5.)
For sudden urinary retention in women, grind into powder, take three scoops with well water. (Formula 6.)
For hematuria in women. Same as above. (Formula 7.)
(For *Ophiopogonis Radix* Maidong): Remove the heart, soak in soup, then steep in wine for tonification. *Rehmanniae Radix* (Dihuang) and *Plantaginis Semen* (Cheqian) act as guiding herbs. It is incompatible with *Dodecatemi Flos* (Kundong), and fears *Sophorae Flavescentis Radix* (Kushen), *Celosiae Semen* (Qingxiang), and *Auricularia Auricula-Judae* (Mu'er).
Sweet in taste, neutral in nature, slightly cold, non-toxic. Enters the Lung and Stomach meridians. Moistens the Lung, clears the Heart, drains heat, removes irritability, eliminates phlegm, stops cough, promotes urination, and generates fluids. It stabilizes Lung atrophy (Feiwei) with expectoration of pus, and resolves heat delirium from epidemic febrile diseases. It treats vomiting, atrophy-weakness (Wei Bi), dried-up menses, and closed lactation.
Available everywhere. Leaves resemble leeks, remaining green in winter and summer. Now mostly cultivated. Method: Plant roots in early April; apply fertilizer and irrigate/weed in June, September, and November. Dig up roots on the day before Summer Solstice, dry, and store. Seeds can also be used for planting, but growth is slower. Those from Zhejiang are of excellent quality.
For persistent epistaxis, decoct with *Rehmanniae Radix Recens* (Shengdi) amounting to three qian; bleeding stops immediately. (Verified Formula 1.)
For bleeding from gum margins, decoct and gargle. (Formula 2.)
For sores in the throat, combine with *Coptidis Rhizoma* (Huanglian), form into honey pills, and take orally. (Formula 3.)
*Maidong Decoction*: *Ophiopogonis Radix* (Maidong), *Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum* (Banxia), Rice, *Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma* (Renshen), *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma* (Gancao), *Jujubae Fructus* (Dazao).
Treats cough with rebellious Qi due to fire and difficulty in the throat. (First among various formulas.)
*Maidong Decoction Paste*: Juice extracted from *Ophiopogonis Radix* (Maidong) is combined with honey and boiled over double boiler while stirring constantly until it resembles maltose syrup. Dissolve daily in warm wine. Tonifies the Middle, benefits the Heart, beautifies the complexion, calms the Spirit, and makes the body robust and strong.
