(Vine-like Plants)
Mu Bei Zi (Strychni Semen, 木鳖子) guides heat-toxins to be expelled outward from the mouth along with phlegm. Fan Mu Bei (Strychnos nux-vomica seed, 番木鳖) guides hot saliva to flow upward and regurgitate.
Mu Bei (Strychni Semen, 木鳖子) [Specifically used for external surgical treatments]. There are two types of this herb. One is called Tu Bie (Earth Beetle), which has a shell; the other is called Fan Mu Bei (Foreign Strychnos Seed), which has no shell. The taste of Mu Bei is predominantly bitter, with slight sweet and acrid notes. Various texts state its nature as warm, attributing this to its acrid flavor. However, upon investigation, its true nature is extremely cold; dogs die after consuming it. If humans mistakenly use it, it causes cold damage to the middle jiao and lockjaw (Jin Kou, 口噤), often leading to untreatable conditions. There have been cases of death due to incorrect usage! Therefore, its functions are mostly applied externally. For example, in cases of swelling toxins, mastitis (Ru Yong, 乳痈), painful hemorrhoids and fistulas, or throat obstruction (Hou Bi, 喉痹), one can rinse the throat with vinegar containing this herb to guide the expulsion of phlegm and resolve heat-toxins. It must not be swallowed. Alternatively, rolled into a tube with Cinnabar (Zhu Sha, 朱砂) and Mugwort Leaf (Ai Ye, 艾叶), it is most effective for fumigating scabies and killing parasites. It can also be boiled in Sesame Oil (Ma You, 麻油) and applied topically to treat tinea. In summary, it must not be taken in decoctions to avoid internal attack by cold-toxins. Fan Bie (i.e., Ma Qian Zi/Strychnos nux-vomica seed, 番鳖/马钱子) has similar efficacy to Mu Bei, but its extremely cold and potent nature is even more severe. For treating heat diseases and throat obstruction, it may only be ground with Dou Gen (Sophorae Tonkinensis Radix, 山豆根) and Qing Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix, 青木香) into juice for holding in the mouth, guiding the regurgitation of phlegm and saliva upward. It must not be swallowed. For pox sores entering the eyes, half a Fan Mu Bei seed, combined with Calamine (Qing Fen, 轻粉), Borneol (Bing Pian, 冰片), and Musk (She Xiang, 麝香) powdered together, can be blown into the right ear if the left eye is affected, or into the left ear if the right eye is affected. Blowing twice daily will stop the condition. Dogs have a strongly hot nature; using this extremely cold substance internally creates opposition, causing immediate death. It is used only for external surgical treatment. When used, the oil must be removed.
(Woody Plants)
Hu Tong Lei (Tamarici Flos, 胡桐泪) [Specifically enters the Stomach meridian, and concurrently enters the Kidney meridian]. It tastes bitter and salty, and is extremely cold. It specifically treats sore throat with heat-pain, wind-heat affecting teeth and gums (Chi Feng Gan, 齿风疳), scrofula (Luo Li, 瘰疬), and tubercles. This is because these conditions arise from excessive heat within, attacking the mouth and teeth, manifesting as various diseases. Without this bitter flavor, parasites cannot be controlled; without this salty flavor, hard accumulations cannot be resolved; without this extreme cold nature, heat cannot be cleared. The Classic states: "When heat overflows internally, treat it with salty-cold methods." It also states: "For disorders located high up, induce vomiting according to the situation." Thus, it is known that for severe heat and toxins, one must use strong bitter and extreme cold herbs as emetics to clear them. (Su Song said: Rarely used in ancient formulas, but currently considered the most essential herb by practitioners treating oral and dental diseases.) This aligns with the common saying that "the disease should bear the brunt of the medicine." However, this herb should not be taken in large doses, lest it cause incessant vomiting. Those that form clumps resembling small stone flakes are of best quality. (Li Shizhen said: Stone tears fall into the earth and absorb saline energy, thus their cold nature clears heat, and their salty flavor enters the bones to soften hardness.) Mu Lei (Wood Tears) resembles ointment or oil. (It is formed from flowing resin.)
