Duye Yizhiqiang (Single-Leaf One-Stem Spear), also known as Jinbian Tu'er (Golden-edged Rabbit Ear) and Tu'er Suan (Rabbit Ear Sour).
It grows at the foot of Yin Mountain. Sprouts emerge during Lixia (Start of Summer). The leaves grow close to the ground, resembling rabbit ears; the foliage is thick, with yellow soft spines on the margins. The back of the stem is covered in yellow hairs. During Hanlu (Cold Dew), a central flower stalk emerges, approximately five cun high, bearing soft, downward-pointing spines, which constitute the flower. Each stalk bears only one flower, hence the name "Yizhi Jian" (One-Stem Arrow). For medicinal use, it should be wrapped in cotton before decoction to prevent the fine hairs from irritating the lungs and causing coughing.
*Bai Cao Jing* (Mirror of All Herbs) records: The leaves of Tu'er Yizhi Jian resemble olives, with spiny margins. There are only seven or eight leaves growing贴地 (close to the ground). The stem emerges in August, reaching nearly one chi in height. The flowers are spike-like with bristly bracts; stems and leaves are hairy. It is harvested in July. Other names include Xiaolu Xian (Little Deer Carrying), Yin Chashi (Silver Tea Spoon), Rendong Cao (Honeysuckle Herb), and Yuexia Hong (Red Under the Moon). Wang Lianshi stated: The initial sprouts of Tu'er Jian are called Jin Chashi (Golden Tea Spoon). It enters the blood level, stops hematemesis, and treats lung abscess. Wang Ancai's prescription notes: Those with red undersides of leaves are named Jin Chashi.
The nature is cold, and the taste is bitter. It promotes blood circulation and cools the blood, enters the Lung meridian, and clears Lung fire. It treats hematemesis and consumptive injury, being most effective in regulating blood. It is an essential herb for treating deficiency and weakness. It is indicated for lung abscess, lung萎 (lung flaccidity), jaundice, heart pain, traumatic injuries, wind-damage strain, cough with hemoptysis, swelling and toxins, intestinal abscess, and leg-curling abscess.
For treating intestinal abscess, lung abscess, and leg-curling abscess: *Cihang Huoren Shu* (Compassionate Book Saving Lives) states: Use twelve tender buds of Baishi Nan leaves and two liang of Tu'er Cao, decocted in good wine. Two doses cure lung abscess; one dose cures intestinal and leg-curling abscesses.
For treating bone-steaming consumption and debility: Wu Puren's formula states: Steam chicken with Duye Yizhi Jian and consume.
It grows in deep mountains. Local people harvest it between April and May and sell it in markets. The plant is two to three cun long, with one stem and two branches; each branch bears one leaf. The leaf resembles a rabbit ear or an arrowhead. The branch is slender and sharp, like a newly sprouted bamboo shoot, hence the name.
*Bai Cao Jing* records: Duye Yizhiqiang grows on mountain plains. Sprouts emerge during Qingming and wither after Guyu. It is two to three cun long, with one leaf and one flower per stalk. The leaf resembles an olive, and the flower resembles a cone drill.
The taste is sweet and bland. Its functions are identical to those of Yizhi Jian. Zhu Zhai, in *Rencheng Riji*, recorded: For bites from various venomous insects, apply fresh Duye Yizhiqiang grass externally by chewing or crushing it; healing occurs immediately.
