Also known as Yanxing Cao (Star-Grinding Herb) or Sanxue Dan (Blood-Dispersing Cinnabar). It grows in damp and shady places. After the Start of Spring, shoots and leaves emerge, resembling Gouluann Cao (Dog Egg Grass) but slightly larger, with stems that are faintly red. Flowers bloom after the Grain Rain, which are small and delicate, bearing two seeds each, resembling the seeds of Hebaocao (Pouch Grass).
*Baicao Jing* (Mirror of Hundred Herbs) records: Shoots sprout in February; leaves resemble Shuangzhucao (Double Pearl Grass); fruits develop between nodes, similar to Ebusicaocao (Goat's-Head Grass) seeds but slightly larger. Harvested in March, it withers in May.
*Ge Zufang* (Prescriptions by Ancestor Ge) records: Treats Huangdan (Jaundice), Xianggangjiao (Hong Kong Foot/Charcot-like foot condition), Dandu Youfeng (Erysipelas/Wandering Wind), hematemesis (vomiting blood), and hemoptysis (coughing up blood).
*Baicao Jing* records: Treats traumatic injuries from falls and blows, knife wounds, carbuncles and swellings, blood in sputum, and scabies. Wash with decoction for scabies.
*Caiyao Zhi* (Record of Herb Collection) records: Nature is warm, capable of resolving toxicity. Treats injuries from beating and traumatic bruises. Crush fresh herb to extract juice, mix with wine, and take orally. Apply the dregs to the affected area to immediately reduce swelling and promote healing.
*Yu Jushi Xuanyao Fang* (Selected Essential Prescriptions by Layman Yu) records: For treating traumatic injuries, use Wulingzhi (Trogopterus Dung) 3 qian, Shexiang (Musk) 0.5 qian, and fresh Xiaojiangjuncao (Little General Grass) 3 liang to extract juice. First, decoct the first two ingredients in wine, remove the dregs when ready, then add the herb juice and boil for one or two boils. Take the liquid.
Monk Jianping stated: This herb is miraculous for treating Dingzhong (carbuncles/furuncles). Regardless of the location or type of Ding, it can be used. Pound the herb into a fine paste, apply to the wound while leaving the head of the Ding exposed. The next day, once the flesh tightens, wash off and reapply. Severe cases heal after two applications; mild cases heal after one application. It is truly a sacred medicine for saving critical Ding cases. Personally tested and found effective.
Another variety is named Jiuyeyuntou Ai (Nine-Leaf Cloud-Head Mugwort). Shoots emerge in March from seeds, growing two to three chi high. Leaves resemble Ai Ju (Mugwort Chrysanthemum), with a similar fragrance. It withers after frost. Produced in two locations outside the Great Wall at Wutai Mountain. Recently, people have brought seeds for cultivation, allowing it to be planted elsewhere. In August and September, it produces spikes and calyces resembling wild chrysanthemum calyces, but does not flower or set fruit normally; the actual fruit resembles the heart of a wild chrysanthemum.
*Baicao Jing* records: Shoots sprout in spring; leaves resemble Ai Ju, with a similar fragrance. In August, there are no flowers but there are fruits. The fruits start as bumps, gradually enlarging, containing more than ten seeds inside. The seeds are slender and small. When dried, the leaves are very fragrant.
