Also known as Qianjin Cao (Thousand Gold Grass). It sprouts in early summer, mostly growing by the steps or on the left side of roads. The leaves resemble those of leeks but are soft. In June and July, stems emerge, reaching a height of about one chi (approx. 33 cm), with flowers branching into three parts. The stems are weak yet tough, difficult to break when pulled up, and hardest to eradicate, hence the name Niujin Cao (Ox Tendon Grass).
The roots are used in medicine to treat Tuoli Huang (wasting-yellow syndrome due to overexertion), Laolishang (injury from labor), and Zhai (tuberculosis or chronic consumptive diseases). Take this grass with roots, clean off the mud thoroughly, place it inside the abdomen of a black-bone hen, steam until cooked, remove the grass, and eat the chicken. This is effective. *Baicao Jing* (Mirror of Hundred Herbs): Promotes blood circulation and increases strength; enters the Liver meridian.
Note: *Huzhou Fuzhi* (Gazetteer of Huzhou Prefecture) records: Nantian Zhu, also named Niujin Cao, and also named Wufan Cao (Black Rice Grass). Although the names are the same, the substances are different.
Also known as Cuiyun Cao (Emerald Cloud Grass), Kongque Hua (Peony Flower), Shenjin Hua (Divine Brocade Flower), Hexi Cao (Crane Wing Grass). Fengwei Cao (Phoenix Tail Grass) has a single stem forming petals, with fine leaves clustered together, bearing emerald spots on the leaves. *Baihua Jing* (Mirror of Hundred Flowers) records: Cuiyun Cao lacks straight stalks; it is suitable for hanging upside down or spreading flat on the ground. Because its leaves are green and verdant, layered and crinkled, resembling emerald ornaments and rising clouds, it is so named. However, it has color but no floral fragrance, and is not Yunxiang (Rue).
Its roots take root upon touching soil and wither upon exposure to sunlight; its nature prefers shade and moisture. *Yuezhi* (Records of Yue) states: Kongque Hua can be used to avoid summer heat.
Wang Lianshi's *Caoyao Shu* (Book of Herb Gathering) records: Cuiyun Cao, also named Cuixi Cao. Also known as Aijiao Fengmao (Short-legged Phoenix Feather). Treats hemorrhoids and fistulas by decocting with Walnut Leaves for washing (from Wang Lianshi's formula). Has miraculous effects for treating hemoptysis. *Baicao Jing*: For women with hemoptysis, use 3 qian (approx. 11-12 g) of Cuiyun Cao, decocted in water and taken orally.
In the Guihai year of the Jiaqing reign, I resided at the Wu family home in Xixi. My second son, aged fifteen, suddenly developed red nodules on his abdomen and back, spreading around his waist like a belt. Some called it Shechuan Chuang (Snake-wrapping sore). Previous treatments were ineffective. After two or three days, the nodules subsided, but severe suppuration ensued. Applying Ruyi Jinhuang San (Ruyi Golden Yellow Powder) externally was also ineffective. The next day, a red halo appeared around the sore, expanding further. An old woman advised using Kaiping Fengmao (Opening Peacock Phoenix Feather), which is Cuiyun Cao. Crushed and juiced, applied topically, it disappeared completely overnight. This herb resolves Fire-Toxin so effectively, not only being miraculous for treating bleeding.
Also known as Laoguan Hong (Old Stork Red). Shuijiguan (Water Chicken Comb). Sprouts after Lixia (Start of Summer). One stem grows straight up; the stem is red, leaf tips sharp, long and narrow. Bears fruit in August, hexagonal in shape. Harvested in May.
Treats Fengbi (Wind-Bi syndrome/rheumatic pain) and traumatic injuries. Boil Sheep Liver and consume it to reduce Hongzhang (red obstruction/cloudiness in the eyes).
