It can disperse ghostly phosphorus and wild malevolent influences; illuminating it with fire obtained from striking metal (Gajin) will cause the traces to vanish.
Human vital energy (Yuan Qi) can rescue those who have died suddenly or from nightmare death (Yan Si); breathing air into their mouths to regulate their breath brings them back to life, disperses ghostly qi, and blowing upon them causes the evil to dissipate. To induce the eruption of smallpox/variolous pustules, in cases where yin-cold prevents the lesions from rising or filling with pus, one should use the breath of a robust person to blow upon the affected area; this causes the lesions to rise, become red and vibrant, allows the pus to flow, and resolves the toxin. To stop abdominal pain and diarrhea—conditions common in the elderly due to weak qi and cold invasion—one should have a strong adult rub their hands until extremely hot and frequently cover the patient's navel, allowing the heat from the hands to penetrate the Dantian for self-healing. This utilizes the power of Jun Huo (Monarch Fire/Heart Yang).
Dragons rise from stones; within these stones, there must be scorched and cracked areas, burned by the fire from the dragon's mouth. Scraping the stone powder and decocting it in water treats Pi Ge (obstruction/fullness in the chest and abdomen) with miraculous effect, as the stone has absorbed the dragon's fire... Wood struck by lightning contains the scent of sulfur, having received the qi of thunder-fire. It can treat Jing Xian (convulsions and epilepsy) and malevolent influences; when combined with Biwen Dan (Plague-Dispelling Pill), it is most effective.
[Coal smoke/toxicity] is toxic and unsuitable for contact with objects. Dipping a paper wick in oil and lighting it to shine upon sores can draw toxins out.
[Coal smoke/toxicity] adhering to the body can corrode flesh and cause rot; it can be used for massage to treat wind-pathogen diseases.
Ordinary people cannot utilize it; only Daoist practitioners can employ it to treat illnesses, bringing the dead back to life. Xiang Huo (Ministerial Fire) can condense sarira (relics) and form solid seeds; the three types of fire can kill spirits and demons.
Heating a metal vessel until red-hot and cauterizing the flesh stops bleeding. If accidental needling at the location of the Shen (Spirit) causes unceasing bleeding, cauterize it with a heated metal vessel (Selected from *Xuan Yuan Fang*).
*Benjing Fengyuan* states: In the North, cooking mostly uses coal fire. Since the region belongs to Kan (Water), it sufficiently overcomes the cold qi and assists the True Fire of the Mingmen (Gate of Life). Consuming food cooked with coal fire nourishes Yin, resulting in strong physical strength; however, Southerners consuming such food often develop carbuncles and sores. Those poisoned by it are treated with specific juices to detoxify. However, placing large vats of water near the coal fire allows the toxicity to be dissolved by the water. In the South, cooking mostly uses wood/fire. Consuming food cooked with wood fire nourishes Yang. The qi generated is light and floating, lacking the robust quality of Northern qi. Recently, coal is also produced in the South, and as wood prices rise, many market people use coal. Coal from Zhejiang originates from Quzhou and Yanzhou; coal from Huzhou is harder and finer than northern coal and serves well as a substitute for firewood. Its gas emissions are thinner, and some varieties, like charcoal, have no odor, named "Fragrant Coal" (Xiang Mei). It comes from the mountains around Taihu Lake. *Bencao Gangmu* lists Wujinshi (Black Gold Stone) in the Mineral section, which is coal. Most treatments mentioned refer to the material use of coal, while the Fire section does not record coal fire, hence this supplement. Using Fragrant Coal is best. Cooking all foods with it harmonizes the Spleen and Stomach, nourishes vitality, unblocks Kidney qi, and aids Yang function. For women, it warms the uterus. Mixed coal and smelly coal are toxic.
