(Twenty-one types, with twenty-two additional types)
Fire is divided into Yin and Yang, which constitutes the profound essence of the Supreme Ultimate (Taiji). People generally consider fire to be purely Yang, unaware that there is also Yin Fire; only sages understand this. Thus, the Li Trigram (Li Gua, representing Fire) has a broken line in the center, indicating Yin within Yang; the Kan Trigram (Kan Gua, representing Water) has a solid line in the center, indicating Yang within Yin. The earth nurturing living things follows the same principle: Yang Fire lacks substance and relies on other objects as carriers, attaching itself to them to burn. Yin Fire possesses substance and does not need to attach to objects, yet it cannot burn all things. Generally, Yang Fire is the soul of fire, belonging to Yang, with a hot nature. Yin Fire is the魄 (po, corporeal soul) of fire, belonging to Yin, with a non-hot nature. Li Shizhen (Binhulou) categorized twelve types of fire to distinguish between Yin and Yang. He stated: There are two types of Yang Fire in Heaven: Solar Fire and Star Essence Flying Fire. There are three types of Yang Fire on Earth: Fire from drilling wood, fire from striking stones, and fire from scraping metal. There is one type of Yang Fire in humans: Bing-Ding Yin Fire. Solar heat warms the back; Star Essence Fire has light and sound; when it first hits the ground, it resembles burning stones, and hands cannot approach. Fire from drilling wood produces heat and smoke from both the drill and the wood. Fire from striking stones or scraping metal requires friction between the two objects to generate heat and produce fire, emitting a fiery odor. The breath exhaled by the Monarch Fire (Jun Huo) in the human body is always hot, even in extreme cold weather; these are all examples of Yang Fire. As the soul of fire, although its qi is hot, it must attach to an object to burn. Therefore, crystal absorbs fire from the midday sun and produces smoke when placed on moxa; meteorites (huoyang), being the essence of flying stars, cause houses to burn when they fall into the earth. Fire from drilling wood, striking stones, or scraping metal cannot exist unless the object bears the fire. Human Bing-Ding Fire can dissolve rhinoceros horn and dissipate accumulated Yin Qi, effectively burning while attached to the body. Their qi is evidently fierce. He stated: There are two types of Yin Fire in Heaven: Dragon Fire and Thunder Fire. There are two types of Yin Fire on Earth: Petroleum Fire and Water Fire. There are two types of Yin Fire in humans: Mingmen Minister Fire (Mingmen Xiang Huo) and Three Flavors True Fire. Dragon Fire cannot burn ordinary objects but can burn sand and stone. This is because dragons are inherently pure Yang, yet their fire is Yin in function, using Yang as the substance and Yin as the application. Thunder Fire cannot burn ordinary objects but can melt gold and iron. When thunder strikes an object, there is necessarily sound; its action belongs to Yang, but its substance belongs to Yin. Sand and stone are residual qi of the earth, constituting Primordial Fire, formed with a Yang substance. They melt gold and iron, serving as the mother of Water. Although originally Yin Essence, they are melted using a Yin substance, demonstrating the subtlety of the generation and restriction cycles of the Five Elements (Wu Xing). Petroleum can generate fire in water; no object in water can be burned without petroleum. Water Fire is essentially Salt Essence, which is why seawater glows at night. Extreme Yin Qi cannot burn objects. Mingmen Minister Fire is the desire fire in the human body; together with Three Flavors True Fire, it can self-combust but cannot burn external objects. These are all Yin Fire. As the po of fire, its qi is not hot, and it does not need to attach to objects, yet there is a distinction between what it can and cannot burn. Unlike Yang Fire, which melts everything it encounters. Li Shizhen merely listed the names without clearly explaining the reasons, and their therapeutic indications and functions were kept obscure. Therefore, I have detailed them specifically to supplement this knowledge.
