Also known as *Ziluoqiu* (Purple Robe Ball). It flowers in autumn, with purple circular halos on the blooms, growing on rocks in high mountains. Seedlings emerge after the Start of Summer (*Lixia*). The leaves are similar to those of *Longyacao* (Euphorbia hypericifolia) but slightly smaller, arranged oppositely along the stem. The plant height does not exceed one chi, with a tough and slender root and stem, resembling *Liuyuexue* (Androsace umbellata). Xie Yunxi stated: This plant is found at Phoenix Mountain in West Lake; specimens growing beside rocky banks are suitable for medicinal use, whereas those growing in soil are too fleshy and their therapeutic effects are not immediate. The leaves are opposite like those of *Jumu*, with square purple stems, growing over one chi tall, producing small purple flowers clustered into balls. It has the functions of invigorating blood, dispersing wind, resolving stasis, and dissipating swelling.
Its taste is bland, and its nature is neutral. It treats all kinds of traumatic injuries, bruises, and unresolved blood stasis. It can be taken as juice after crushing, or decocted with water and wine. For conditions caused by wind-cold obstruction, or early-stage carbuncles and sores... [Text cuts off here]
This is the grass that grows on funeral pyre sites. Cheng Yunlai, in his *Jide Fang* (Immediate Formula), records it under the name *Wuyecao* (Five-Leaf Grass), without describing its morphology.
It can displace corneal opacities resulting from smallpox: Crush this herb into a small cake the size of a bean. If there is an opacity in the left eye, apply it to the inner corner of the right eye; the opacity will shift to the right eye. Then apply the same cake to the inner corner of the left eye; the opacity will shift to the bridge of the nose. Remove the cake, and the membrane will clear.
*Zhuluo Zhi* records: It resembles spinach and bears small white flowers. Note: *Bencao Gangmu* mentions *Shanyanc Cao* (Snake Eye Grass), which grows in ancient wells and damp, shady places for many years. Its shape resembles *Danzhuye* (Lophatherum gracile), with red rings on the back of the leaves resembling snake eyes. Crushed and applied externally, it treats snakebites. It is unknown if this is the same substance; it is recorded here for further verification. To treat snakebites, crush the whole plant including roots and apply to the wound, while simultaneously decocting and drinking with wine for immediate cure.
Wang Lianshi's *Caoyao Shu* (Book of Herb Collection) records: *Shanyan Cao* is abundant in rural reed thickets and near water marshes. It treats all kinds of snakebites, carbuncles, hemorrhoids. Commonly called *Shekou* (Snake Mouth), *Ban Zhilian* (Half Branch Lotus), also known as *Luodeyao* (Fall and Bite).
Zhu Paishan's *Ganyuan Xiaoshi* (Small Records from the Citrus Garden) states: *Qiannianjian* (Thousand Year Strength) originates from Cochinchina and is now produced in various upper prefectures of Guangxi. It resembles vines, several chi long, with an extremely fragrant and potent aroma. It can be infused in medicinal wine and is most suitable for elderly people suffering from wind-dampness pain. Radish (*Laifu*) should be avoided.
To strengthen sinews and bones, infuse in wine. It can be combined with *Zuandifeng* (Trachelospermum jasminoides root), tiger bone, *Niuxi* (Achyranthes bidentata), sweet goji berries, two batches of silkworm feces, and *Bixie* (Dioscorea hypoglauca rhizome) to formulate a treatment for wind-dampness. It also stops stomachache; take by grinding with wine.
