White flowers are of superior quality, and those produced in stream ravines are especially good. Its root is used for medicine; it should not be taken in large doses, as it causes vomiting and diarrhea and damages stomach Qi (vital energy).
It treats distension and swelling due to fluid retention (Gu Zhang), clears and promotes the flow of water passages; locally produced roots are used to treat traumatic injuries, taken in small amounts after being pounded and mixed with wine. (From Wang Lianshi's *Ca Yao Shu*.)
Ye Xi Cao (Wild Mat Grass) & Wu Long Xu (Black Dragon Whiskers)
Also known as Cha Ji Cao (Fork Chicken Grass), Lv Pao Cao (Green Robe Grass), Tie Xian Cao (Iron Wire Grass), Tie Xian Tong (Iron Wire Tube), Ren Zi Cao (Human Character Grass). It resembles Polygonum aviculare (Bian Xu) but is smaller, with slender round stems, distinct from Shi Long Chu (Stone Dragon Forage) recorded in *Ben Cao Gang Mu*.
*Bai Cao Jing* states: It grows in mountain marshes and watersides, sprouting after the Guyu solar term. It is similar to Ye Xi Cao, but while the leaves of Ye Xi Cao grow upright, this grass spreads horizontally on the ground. It sends up stems at the Xiaoman solar term, producing small green flowers.
Desheng Tang Prescribed Formula: Bang Chui Cao (Club Grass), also named Ya Ji Cao, treats traumatic injuries.
Wang Lian's Formula: People in Ou region use this to weave mats; it has names such as Shi Long Chu and Cao Long Chu. Later, "Chu" was miswritten as "Xu". Locally produced ones are indeed Cha Ji Cao. Also called Lu Pao Cao, it treats all kinds of sores and scabies. Zhi Zhen Zhi Xi Long Xu has a mild nature, disperses wind-heat, and regulates damp-heat.
It treats various toxins in the mouth and throat, and toothache caused by fire syndromes.
It grows beside mountain and marsh waters, slightly shorter and finer than mat grass, also called Long Xu Cao (Dragon Whisker Grass). Sprouts appear after Qingming, blooming with tiny flowers at Xiaoman. The root resembles bamboo rhizome, is black in color, and the root is used for medicinal purposes. It treats metrorrhagia (profuse uterine bleeding), pain due to wind pathogens, crane-knee wind (deformity of the knee joint resembling a crane's knee), nocturnal emission. Taken with wine decoction, or washed externally with herbal decoction to induce sweating. *Cao Yao Jian* records: It promotes the discharge of damp-heat, treats strangury (dysuria), turbid urine, metrorrhagia with damp-bi syndrome, epistaxis with malar swelling, brightens the eyes, treats wart pain, toxins in mouth/throat, and crane-knee wind due to fire. *Bai Cao Jing* records: It treats scrofula and phlegm nodules. Wang Yongyu records: For frequent nasal bleeding, decoct the root of Ye Xi Cao and take orally (alias Yi Pan Zhu).
For toothache where teeth are loose and about to fall out.
Ren Hui Fang: Decoct the root of Ye Xi Cao and drink it as tea. Toothache will cease naturally within one or two days and never recur again, Shi (text possibly incomplete or refers to stone/mineral context).
Xu Yishi said: A villager walking in the fields saw a cluster of long, thin grass hanging on an old crow tree, resembling rush stem, drooping downwards. A Daoist priest pointed and said, "This is named Wu Long Xu." It grows on the tree illuminated by the Five Lucky Stars. If harvested, dried, and stored, it can treat chronic diseases and all blood disorders. The villager followed his advice, and subsequent use proved quite effective.
It treats carbuncles and swellings, all blood disorders, and lao zhai (chronic wasting diseases such as tuberculosis).
