Bai Shi records: Fengye is produced in Guiyang County, Chenzhou. It is used for brewing tea and can cure cephalic wind disease (headaches caused by wind pathogens), hence its name. It can also be soaked in wine for consumption. Its nature is slightly warm. Previous local gazetteers and notes did not record this.
Its nature is slightly warm; it expels wind and invigorates blood circulation. It can be soaked in wine and taken orally.
Kunyu Tushuo states: This is the name of a tree species originating from Bailu Country. The resin exuded by this tree has an extremely strong fragrance and can be used as medicine. Applied to wounds caused by metal blades, the muscles heal completely within twenty-four hours. Applied to smallpox lesions, it prevents scarring. Applied to corpses, it prevents decomposition for a thousand years.
It is Lu Lu Tong (the fruit of Liquidambar formosana). Also known as Fengshi, these are the seeds produced by the maple tree. Externally, they have a spiny ball resembling a chestnut shell; internally, the nut has multiple pores, commonly known as Lu Lu Tong. When pasted with gold foil, village women pin them into their hair, claiming it brightens the eyes and promotes longevity. Those produced behind the Yinxian County Office at Anle Mountain in Lin'an County, Zhejiang, are called Qianfen Fengguo and are considered the best quality. When burned, the fragrance is rich and can be used to fumigate clothes and dispel miasma and epidemics. Bencao Gangmu's entry on Fragrant Resin of Maple Tree notes that the bark is less effective than the fruit; this is supplemented here. It is suitable for burning, but there are no records of its use in decoctions. In winter, the fruit harbors maple silkworm eggs inside. In spring, silkworms hatch within each fruit. After Lixia (Start of Summer), they transform into moths and fly away. For medicinal use, select fruits without insect damage that have been stored for a long time. Huai Xi Za Zhi records: Fengxiang Guo from Yunnan, when burned, drives away evil spirits and dispels dampness and miasma.
It dispels miasma, eliminates plague toxins, brightens the eyes, removes dampness, and relieves stiffness and spasms of meridians. It cures generalized bi-syndrome pain, pain in the hands, feet, and waist. Fumigating with its smoke alleviates these conditions. It can be used to fumigate clothing and bedding.
Zhao Xuemin's commentary: Removing the outer spines from the Fengguo reveals a spongy, honeycomb-like interior, which is Lu Lu Tong. Its property strongly unblocks the acupoints of the twelve meridians. Therefore, it is used to treat water swelling edema by searching out and expelling latent water-dampness pathogens.
To treat tinea, De Sheng Tang's transmitted prescription: Ten spiny balls from the maple tree (burned to ash while retaining efficacy) and 0.5 fen of white arsenic, ground into powder together. Apply with sesame oil for immediate cure.
To treat internal hemorrhoids/damp-heat toxicity (Zang Du), Ancient and Modern Excellent Prescriptions: One Lu Lu Tong, processed to retain efficacy, ground into powder, decocted in wine and taken orally.
Ci Yun
Taiwan Prefecture Gazetteer records: The wood of Yaoren Gou (Biting Dog Tree) is very loose; when pinched by hand, long strips protrude, making it useful as fire-starting material. The tree grows over one zhang high. The leaves are large, resembling tobacco leaves, and possess hairy thorns. If the thorns penetrate the skin pores, they cause intense itching. Scratching leads to redness and pain, which subsides after twenty-four hours.
Treats scrofula (from Hai Tai Shi Cha Lu).
Appendix: Ci Yun. Li Shi Cao Mi records: The tree resembles Diospyros lotus, has thorns, and causes dizziness upon pricking, hence its name.
To treat carbuncles and swellings and relieve pain: Take the tree resin and leaves, mix with salt crystals from sauce boards, and apply as a poultice to back carbuncles, ulcers, and toxic swellings. For severe pain, application provides immediate relief, regardless of whether the lesion has ulcerated or not. Continue application until healed.
