This herb appears in late autumn, bears purple flowers, and its seeds resemble Sichuan pepper kernels. It is found everywhere in low-lying and damp areas. The leaves resemble those of Boehmeria nivea (ramie) but have an unpleasant odor, hence the name "Chicken Louse Grass" (Ji Shi). *Bixiao Fang* states: To treat wind-toxicity and flowing fire, take a handful, decoct it in wine, and drink; or boil it in wine for the time it takes to burn one incense stick, strain, and take the liquid. Both methods are effective.
*Bai Cao Jing* states: This herb sprouts after Start of Summer. The leaves resemble those of Polygonum multiflorum (He Shou Wu) but are slightly narrower, growing oppositely. The stems and leaves have fine white hairs, unlike the glossy stems and leaves of P. multiflorum. The root resembles Salvia miltiorrhiza var. notata (Bai Wei), with much whiteness, hence the name. The root is used medicinally. Wang An's *Caipao Lu* states: Laojun Xu grows by streams and ravines, with vines two to three chi long, green stems, and dozens of white-yellowish rootlets. It can dissipate epigastric fullness masses (Pi). According to Wang Sancai's *Yi Bian*: Laojun Xu is present throughout spring, summer, autumn, and winter, standing out among other herbs for its verdant color, considered noble. The stems and vines are green, leaves are similar to [missing character] leaves but pointed and small, roots resemble whiskers, white like taro roots. Pulling the vine removes it. Commonly known as "Shegong's Mouth Whiskers," it also treats swelling and toxicity. Collect the root, pound it fresh, and take with raw wine; apply the dregs to the affected area.
It tastes pungent and is hot in nature. It breaks up blood stasis. Mao's formula uses it to treat scrofula (Lu Li).
To treat epigastric fullness masses (Pi Jie): *Yi Bian* states: For chronic cases where the mass becomes hard like a turtle or clam shell, repeated use is extremely effective. Use only Laojun Xu. In spring and summer, use stems and leaves; in autumn and winter, use roots. Quantity is unrestricted. Place them in a jar of good raw wine along with one crucian carp. Boil starting at sunset until the fish is cooked. Have the patient eat the fish first, then drink the wine, and subsequently apply the herbal dregs to the site of the mass. Remove the dregs the next morning. If matter is discharged via stool or urine, it is effective. If there is no response, continue taking it for three to five times until the matter is expelled without a trace. Its miraculous efficacy is beyond description.
Yu Xiaoyuan states: It treats wind-bi syndrome, dissipates blood accumulations (Xue Jia), sallow complexion, and epigastric masses.
Wang Lianshi states: The roots of Laojun Xu are thin like Bai Wei. It regulates qi, reduces swelling, unblocks Guan Ge (obstruction characterized by vomiting and inability to urinate), eliminates toxins, and resolves sores. All are decocted in wine for administration.
Wang An's *Caipao Fang* states: The root of Gold Hair Orchid (Anoectochilus roxburghii) is named Laojun Xu. When combined with Longhu Dan, it treats thirty-six types of wind syndromes, paralysis, and crab-knee wind (Gan Xi Feng).
