(Song Dynasty *Tu Jing Ben Cao*)
[Collected Explanations] Song said: It grows in Jiangxi and Chuzhou. In June, it opens purple flowers and bears fruit. Its seedlings are collected for medicinal use and are very easy to obtain. Later, due to its effectiveness when used by people, it has become quite expensive.
Li Shizhen said: According to the *Yi Tong Zhi*, it is produced in Yongfeng County, Ji'an.
[Flavor and Properties] Acrid, hot, toxic.
[Therapeutic Actions] Treats wind-bi (rheumatic arthralgia), strengthens sinews and bones, and also treats traumatic injuries from falls and blows (Su Song).
[Elucidation] Song said: The *Shen Yi Pu Jiu Fang* already includes its use in formulas for treating wind diseases.
Li Shizhen said: Wei's *De Xiao Fang* uses it in decoctions of anesthetic wines. The *Sheng Ji Lu* describes a formula called Zuona Wan (Sitting-Holding Pill) for treating deficiency-heat above the diaphragm, throat obstruction, dark and scanty urination, mental fatigue with excessive sleepiness. It consists of Zuona Cao (Datura Herb), Dahuang (Rhubarb Rhizome), Chishao Yao (Red Peony Root), Muxiang (Aucklandia Root), Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Mutong (Akebia Stem), Suanzaoren (Ziziphus Seed), Yiyiren (Coix Seed), and Zhike (Bitter Orange Fruit) in equal parts. These are ground into powder and formed into pills the size of wu-tzu seeds with honey. Take 20 pills each time, washed down with Maidong Tang (Ophiopogon Decoction).
[Appendix] Yapulu
Li Shizhen said: According to Zhou Mi's *Guixin Zazhi*, in the Huihui region north of the desert, there is a herb named Yapulu. Locals grind a small amount and mix it into wine for drinking; after consumption, the whole body becomes numb and paralyzed until death, and even if cut or chopped with knives and axes, the person feels no pain. After three days, administering a small amount of antidote medicine revives them.
The Imperial Medicine Bureau also stores this substance. For corrupt officials with serious crimes, they administer "Baishi Dan" (Hundred-Day Pill), which all contain this herb. Did Hua Tuo not have such drugs when he performed abdominal surgeries to wash out the stomach?
(*Bencao Gangmu*)
[Names] Fengqie'er (Wind Eggplant) (*Bencao Gangmu*), Shanqiezi (Mountain Eggplant).
Li Shizhen said: The *Lotus Sutra* states that when the Buddha preached the Dharma, Madeluro flowers rained from heaven. Also, in Daoism, the envoy of the Tuoluo Star in the Big Dipper holds this flower. Hence, later generations named the flower after it. "Madela Luo" is Sanskrit for "mixed colors." "Qie" (eggplant) refers to the leaf shape. Yao Bosheng's *Hua Pin* calls it "E Ke" (Bad Guest).
[Collected Explanations] Li Shizhen said: Madeluro grows in northern regions and is also cultivated by households. It sprouts in spring and grows in summer, with a single stem rising straight up, four to five chi high, growing without lateral branches. It has green stems and jade-green leaves, with leaves resembling those of the eggplant. In August, it opens white flowers with six petals, larger than morning glory flowers.
The flowers split open in clusters, surrounded by overlapping leaves, opening in the morning and closing at night. It bears round fruits with horn-like projections containing small seeds. Flowers are harvested in August, and fruits in September. Flowers and seeds.
[Flavor and Properties] Acrid, warm, toxic.
[Therapeutic Actions] Treats various wind disorders and cold-dampness affecting the legs (Hong Kong Foot/Jiaoqi), by decocting and washing. It also treats epilepsy and rectal prolapse, and is included in anesthetic preparations.
[Elucidation] Li Shizhen said: It is traditionally said that if this flower is harvested while laughing and brewed into wine, drinkers will laugh; if harvested while dancing and brewed into wine, drinkers will dance. I have tried it myself. One must drink until half-drunk, then have someone induce laughter or dancing to verify the effect. Harvest these flowers in August and Cannabis Flower (Huomazi Hua) in July, dry them in the shade, and grind them into powder in equal proportions. Mix 3 qian with warm wine and take orally. Soon, one feels drowsy as if drunk. Before surgical incisions or moxibustion, taking this beforehand eliminates pain.
[Attached Prescriptions] Three new prescriptions.
Sores on the face: Dry Madeluro flowers, grind into powder. Apply a small amount topically. (*Weisheng Yijian Fang*) Infantile slow convulsions: Seven Madeluro flowers (weighing 1 qian), Tianma (Gastrodia Rhizome) 2.5 qian, Quanxie (Whole Scorpion) 10 pieces (stir-fried), Tiannanxing (Arisaema Rhizome) (processed), Dansha (Cinnabar), and Ruxiang (Frankincense) each 2.5 qian. Grind into powder. Take 0.5 qian each time, mixed with Bohe Tang (Mint Decoction). (*Yuyuan Yuan Fang*)
Rectal prolapse: A pair of Madeluro seeds (with shell) and 16 oak galls. Chop together, decoct in water for three to five boils, add a small amount of Puxiao (Mirabilite), and wash the affected area. (*Rumen Shiqin*)
