(Hu, pronounced "hu". From *Tang Bencao*.)
[Correction] Moved from the Wood section and attached here.
[Names] Hu (Su), Piao (both from *Erya*), Large-leaf Oak (common name), Li Zi.
Li Shizhen said: Hu resembles "husu" (trembling). When chestnuts split open and hang, they have a trembling appearance, hence called "Li"; when Hu leaves shake, they have a trembling posture, hence called "Hu". Piao refers to the dancing, lush appearance. The tree is gnarled, and its leaves are dense, thus the name. It is commonly said that disheveled clothing is called "Piao", originating from this. Its wood is strong, so it is commonly called Li Zi. *Shiji* records: Empress Wu hung an amnesty edict on a Hu tree, so people came to call it the Golden Rooster Tree.
[Collection of Explanations] Su Song said: Hu grows in forests and mountains everywhere. The tree is over one zhang tall, similar to Oak. It also has acorns (cupules), but they are small and not useful. Harvest at any time. The bark and leaves are used as medicine.
Kong Zongshi said: Hu also has acorns; although the wood is hard, it is not suitable for construction materials, only for firewood, and the charcoal produced is inferior to that of Oak.
Li Shizhen said: There are two types of Hu: one type grows in clusters and is smaller, named Fu (pronounced "fu", see *Erya*). The other type is taller, named Large-leaf Oak. The tree and leaves resemble Chestnut but grow larger, thicker, and denser. They shed leaves in winter, bloom in March-April like Chestnut, and bear fruit in August-September resembling acorns but slightly shorter and smaller, with cupules at the base. The fruit is stiff, astringent, and bad-tasting, yet people eat it during famine years. Its grain is coarse and inferior to Oak, referred to as "Chuli material".
[Rhyme and Flavor] Bitter, astringent, neutral, non-toxic.
[Main Indications] Steamed and made into powder, it astringes the intestines and stops dysentery, with effects similar to acorns (Li Shizhen).
