(From *Bencao Shiyi* [Supplement to Materia Medica])
[Indications] For sudden onset of mania and epilepsy, burn the dried cattail leaves (*Chenpu*) into ash, and take three finger-pinches with water. Boiling the dried cattail leaves in water for decoction is also effective (Zang Qi).
[Elucidation] Li Shizhen says: According to Zhang Lei's *Mingdao Zazhi*, a wealthy young man in Qishui went to visit a courtesan's residence. In fright, he fled and stepped on the corpse of an executed person. Overwhelmed by terror, he fell into madness. The renowned physician Pang Anchang took the rope used to hang a prisoner, burned it to ash, mixed it with medicine, and administered it to him, resulting in a cure. From this case, we see that obscure substances recorded in ancient texts can be useful; it depends on encountering physicians who are flexible and resourceful.

[Indications] Hongxiangjiao (Foot Qi / Beriberi) (Zang Qi).
(From *Bencao Shiyi*)
[Indications] Shizhu (Corpse Transmission / Infectious Disease attributed to spirits), Shihuan (Stone Ascaris). Also treats verrucae vulgaris (warts). Rub the affected area with a dead person's pillow and mat twenty-one times until the skin breaks, then remove the warts (Zang Qi). Treats spontaneous sweating and night sweats.
[Elucidation] Zang Qi says: An old woman suffered from cold stagnation for years without recovery. Xu Sibai of the Song Dynasty diagnosed her, saying: This is Shizhu. You must boil a dead person's pillow and drink the decoction to be cured. He went to an ancient tomb to retrieve a pillow, which was already decayed and missing one side. After the woman took it, she recovered immediately. Zhang Jingsheng, at fifteen years old, suffered from abdominal distension and yellow complexion, which various medicines could not treat. He asked Sibai for advice. Sibai said: This is Shihuan, extremely difficult to treat. You must boil a dead person's pillow and drink the decoction. He expelled large ascarids, about five or six sheng, with heads hard as stone, and the illness resolved. Shen Sengyi suffered from eye pain and frequently saw ghosts. Sibai said: Evil qi has entered the Liver. Find a dead person's pillow, boil it, and drink the decoction. Finally, bury the pillow back in its original place. Following his advice, he was also cured. Wang Yan asked: These three diseases are different, yet all were cured using a dead person's pillow. Why?
Sibai replied: Shizhu is ghostly qi, latent and unarisen, causing lethargy. Treating it with a dead person's pillow causes the soul's qi to fly away and not reattach to the body; hence, boiling and drinking the pillow is used. When evil qi enters the Liver, it causes eye pain and visions of demons. One must use something evil to hook and draw out the evil qi; thus, the qi of the dead person's pillow is utilized. Since the evil qi must not remain, the pillow is buried in its original place.
Li Shizhen says: According to Xie Shitai's *Shanfan Fang*: To treat Shizhu, where patients see corpses or hear crying sounds, take a piece of a dead person's mat (leftover from a coffin and discarded on the road) approximately one tiger-mouth width (about three cun), add three sheng of water, boil down to one sheng, and drink. Effect is immediate. This applies the same principle as using a dead person's pillow, so I append it here. [Section] Two items of utensils used for ingestion (Category 54: Utensils)
