[Etymology] Li Shizhen stated: According to Liu Xi's "Shiming" (Explanation of Names), the term "bing" (cake/bread) means "combining," referring to mixing flour and water so that they adhere together. There are types such as steamed cake (Zhengbing), boiled dough strips (Tangbing), Hu cake, Suo cake, and butter cake, all named according to their shapes.
[Collection and Explanation] Li Shizhen stated: There are many foods made from wheat flour, but steamed cake (Zhengbing) has the longest history. It is a single-flour product made using fermented yeast (jiuzao). It is required for making pills and can also treat diseases, yet it is not recorded in Materia Medica texts, which is an omission. Only those steamed during the twelfth lunar month or on Cold Food Festival, dried until the skin cracks, peeled, and hung in the wind to dry, are suitable. When needed, they are soaked in water to swell, pounded into a paste, filtered, and combined with herbs regulating the Spleen, Stomach, and Sanjiao (Triple Burner). They are very easy to digest. Moreover, the fermented flour has lost its original nature and does not promote damp-heat. Those filled with fruits, vegetables, or greasy substances are unsuitable for medicinal use.
[Flavor and Property] Sweet in flavor, neutral in nature, non-toxic.
[Main Indications] (Li Shizhen): Promotes digestion, nourishes the Spleen and Stomach, warms the Middle Jiao to resolve stagnation, benefits Qi and invigorates Blood, stops sweating, unblocks the Sanjiao, and promotes the flow of water passages.
[Innovation and Clarification] Li Shizhen stated: According to "Aizhu Tansou": When Emperor Ningzong of Song was a Prince of a Commandery, he suffered from Lin syndrome (dysuria characterized by frequent, urgent, and painful urination), rising at night three hundred times. The imperial physicians were at a loss. Someone recommended Sun Lin for treatment. Sun Lin used steamed cake (Zhengbing), garlic, and light soybean paste (Danchidou) pounded into pills, instructing the patient to take thirty pills with warm water. He said, "Take three doses today, and the illness should reduce by one-third; do the same tomorrow, and the illness will be cured in three days." This proved true subsequently. The Emperor bestowed upon him a thousand strings of cash. When asked about his reasoning, Sun Lin said, "How could a child suffer from Lin syndrome? It is merely due to obstructed water passages; these three substances can all unblock and promote flow." One like Sun Lin is worthy of discussing medicine.
[Attached Prescriptions] Six new prescriptions.
