(From *Bencao Shiyi*)
[Shi Ming] Jiaoliao (from *Mao Shi Zheng Yi*); Tao Chong (from *Shi Jing*); Mengjiu (from *Xun Zi*); Nvjiang (from *Fang Yan*); Huangque (common name).
Li Shizhen said: According to *Er Ya*: "Tao Chong" is Jiao. Its female is called "Jiao". Yang Xiong's *Fang Yan* states: "Sangfei" is called Qiaoque or Nvjiang east of Hangu Pass. West of Hangu Pass, it is called Waque or Qiaonv. People in Yan call it Qiaofu. In Jiangdong, it is called Taoque or Bumü. The turtledove is clumsy, while the jay is skillful; hence these various names.
[Ji Jie] Chen Cangqi said: The Qiaofu bird is smaller than a sparrow, building nests in forests and marshes. The nest resembles a small pouch.
Li Shizhen said: Jiaoliao are found everywhere. They live among artemisia trees and on fences. Their appearance resembles that of the yellow sparrow but is smaller; they have gray feathers with spots, their call sounds like blowing air, and their beaks are sharp like awls. They gather reed fluff to build nests, about the size of a chicken egg, secured with hemp hair, made with great precision. Hung on trees, sometimes single-chambered, sometimes double-chambered. Hence the saying: "The forest nest holds but one branch, each meal takes but a few grains." Some keep them as pets and train them to perform tricks. There is another type, Liao, called Pouwei in *Er Ya*. It resembles a sparrow with blue-gray spotted plumage and a long tail, feeding on reed borers; it also belongs to the Jiao category.
Meat
[Qi Wei] Flavor: sweet; Nature: warm; Toxicity: non-toxic.
[Zhu Zhi] Roasted and eaten, it is very delicious and enhances intelligence (Wang Ying).

[Zhu Zhi] Burning the nest to produce smoke and fumigating the hands makes women skilled at silk reeling (Chen Cangqi). Treats Ge Qi (diaphragmatic qi stagnation) and dysphagia. Burn one nest to ash and take with wine, or take three qian per dose; it is miraculously effective (Li Shizhen, from *Weisheng Yijian Fang*).
