【释名】颂曰∶叶似大麻，子形宛如牛蜱，故名。

高丈余，子大如皂荚核，用之亦良。

【修治】 曰∶凡使勿用黑夭赤利子，缘在地蒌上生，是颗两头尖有毒。其蓖麻子，节
节有黄黑斑。凡使以盐汤煮半日，去皮取子研用。
时珍曰∶取蓖麻油法∶用蓖麻仁五升捣烂，以水一斗煮之，有沫撇起，待沫尽乃止。去
水，以沫煎至点灯不炸、滴水不散为度。
【气味】甘、辛，平，有小毒。
时珍曰∶凡服蓖麻者，一生不得食炒豆，犯之必胀死。其油能伏丹砂、粉霜。
【主治】水症。以水研二十枚服之，吐恶沫，加至三十枚，三日一服，瘥则止。
又主风虚寒热，身体疮痒浮肿，尸疰恶气，榨取油涂之（《唐本》）。研敷疮痍疥癞。涂
手足心，催生（大明）。治瘰 。取子炒熟去皮，每卧时嚼服二三枚，渐加至十数枚，

【发明】震亨曰∶蓖麻属阴，其性善收，能追脓取毒，亦外科要药。
之滞物，故取胎产胞衣、剩骨胶血者用之。
时珍曰∶蓖麻仁甘辛有毒热，气味颇近巴豆，亦能利人，故下水气。其性善走，能开通
诸窍经络，故能治偏风、失音口噤、口目 斜、头风七窍诸病，不止于出有形之物而已。盖
鹈鹕油能引药气入内，蓖麻油能拔病气出外，故诸膏多用之。一人病偏风，手足不举。时珍
用此油同羊脂、麝香、鲮鲤甲等药，煎作摩膏，日摩数次，一月余渐复。兼服搜风化痰养血
之剂，三月而愈。一人病手臂一块肿痛，亦用蓖麻捣膏贴之，一夜而愈。一人病气郁偏头痛，
用此同乳香、食盐捣 太阳穴，一夜痛止。一妇产后子肠不收，捣仁贴其丹田，一夜而上。
此药外用屡奏奇勋，但内服不可轻率尔。或言捣膏以箸点于鹅马六畜舌根下，即不能食，或
点肛内，即下血死，其毒可知矣。
【附方】旧九，新三十二。
半身不遂，失音不语∶取蓖麻子油一升，酒一斗，铜锅盛油，着酒中一日，煮之令熟。

口目 斜∶蓖麻子仁捣膏，左贴右，右贴左，即正。《妇人良方》∶用蓖麻子仁七七粒，

风处阴干。用时先将好末茶调成膏子涂盏内，后将炭火烧前药烟起，以盏覆之。待烟尽，以
百沸葱汤点盏内茶药服之。后以绵被裹头卧，汗出避风。（《袖珍方》）
鼻窒不通∶蓖麻子仁（去皮）三百粒，大枣（去皮核）十五枚。捣匀，绵裹塞之。一日
一易，三十余日闻香臭也。（《普济方》）
天柱骨倒，小儿疳疾及诸病后，天柱骨倒，乃体虚所致，宜生筋散贴之∶木鳖子六个（去
壳），
蓖麻子六十粒（去壳）。研匀。先包头擦项上令热，以津调药贴之。（《郑氏小儿方》）
五种风痫，不问年月远近∶用蓖麻子仁二两，黄连一两，用银石器纳水一大碗，文武火
煮之。
干即添水，三日两夜取出黄连，只用蓖麻风干，勿令见日，以竹刀每个切作四段。每服二十
段，食后荆芥汤下，日二服。终身忌食豆，犯之必腹胀死。（《卫生宝鉴》）

竹木骨哽∶蓖麻子仁一两，凝水石二两。研匀。每以一捻置舌根，噙咽，自然不见。又
方∶蓖麻油、红曲等分。研细，沙糖丸皂子大，绵裹含咽，痰出大良。

【气味】有毒。

掺药

问年深日近。用经霜蓖麻叶、经霜桑叶、御米壳（蜜炒）各一两。为末，蜜丸弹子大。每服
一丸，白汤化下，日一服，名无忧丸。
【附录】博落回（《拾遗》） 藏器曰∶有大毒。主恶疮瘿根，瘤赘息肉，白癜风，蛊毒
精魅，溪毒疮 。和百丈青、鸡桑灰等分，为末敷之。蛊毒精魅当别有法。生江南山谷。茎
叶如蓖麻。茎中空，吹之作声如博落回。折之有黄汁，药人立死，不可轻用入口。
【蓖麻】（音同“卑”。出自《唐本草》）
【释名】苏颂说：叶子像大麻，种子形状像牛身上的蜱虫，所以得名。
李时珍说：“蓖”也写作“䖵”，“䖵”就是牛虱。因为它的种子上有麻点，所以叫蓖麻。
【集解】恭说：这是民间种植的，叶子像大麻叶但非常大，结出的果实像牛蜱。现在从胡地传来的品种，茎是红色的，高达一丈多，种子大得像皂荚核，使用效果也很好。

【Processing】Zhen Quan said: Do not use black, shriveled, or Chi Li seeds, as they grow on Tribulus terrestris (Jili), are pointed at both ends, and are toxic. Castor beans have yellow-black spots along their segments. To process, boil them in salt water for half a day, remove the skin, take the kernels, and grind for use.
Li Shizhen said: Method for extracting castor oil: Take five sheng of castor kernels, pound them into a paste, add one dou of water, and boil. Skim off the foam until it ceases. Remove the water, and simmer the remaining liquid until it does not sizzle when dropped on a lamp wick and does not disperse when dropped in water.
【Flavor and Properties】Sweet, pungent, neutral, slightly toxic.
Li Shizhen said: Anyone taking castor bean must never eat fried beans for life; doing so will cause fatal abdominal distension. Its oil can suppress the properties of Cinnabar (Dansha) and Lead Oxide (Fenshuang).
【Indications】Edema. Grind twenty seeds in water and ingest to induce vomiting of foul froth. Increase to thirty seeds, taken once every three days, stop when cured.
Also indicates wind-deficiency with alternating cold and heat, body sores, itching, swelling, corpse-infection evil qi. Extract oil and apply topically (*Tang Bencao*). Grind and apply to sores, scabies, and leprosy. Apply to palms and soles to facilitate childbirth (Daming). Treats scrofula. Take seeds, roast, remove skin, chew two or three before sleep, gradually increasing to ten or more; effective (Zong Shi). Li Shizhen said: Castor kernel is sweet, pungent, toxic, and hot in nature. Its flavor resembles Croton tiglium (Badou) and can also promote drainage, thus eliminating water qi. Its nature moves freely, opening various orifices and meridians, thus treating hemiplegia, aphasia, lockjaw, facial paralysis, head wind, and diseases of the seven orifices, not merely expelling有形 (tangible) matter. Generally, Pelican oil guides medicinal qi inward, while castor oil draws pathogenic qi outward; thus, many plasters use it. A person suffered from hemiplegia with immobility of limbs. Li Shizhen used this oil mixed with sheep fat, musk, and Manis pentadactyla scales, decocted into a massage plaster, applied several times daily, recovering gradually after over a month. Combined with internal herbs for dispelling wind, resolving phlegm, and nourishing blood, cured in three months. Another person had a swollen, painful mass on the arm; treated with castor pounded into plaster, cured overnight. Another suffered from qi-stagnation headache; applied with frankincense and rock salt to Taiyang acupoint, pain stopped overnight. A postpartum woman had uterine prolapse; applied kernel paste to Dantian, uterus returned overnight. This herb achieves miraculous results externally, but internal use must not be rash. Some say applying plaster to the tongue root of geese, horses, or livestock prevents eating, or applying to anus causes fatal hemorrhage, indicating its toxicity.

Hemiplegia, aphasia: Take one sheng of castor oil, one dou of wine. Place oil in copper pot, add wine, leave for one day, cook until ripe. Drink slowly (*Waitai Miyao*).
Facial paralysis: Pound castor kernels into paste. Apply to the healthy side opposite the affected side (left apply right, right apply left) to correct alignment. *Funren Liangfang*: Use forty-nine kernels, grind into cakes. If deviation is to the right, place on left palm; if to the left, on right palm. Sit over a copper basin of hot water, replacing when cool; effective after five applications. Another method: Forty-nine castor kernels, nineteen Badou seeds, five fen musk, make cakes as above.
Wind-pattern severe headache: Equal parts frankincense and castor kernel, pound into cakes, apply to Taiyang acupoint according to side, loosen hair to allow ventilation; very effective. *Desheng Tang Fang*: Cut castor oil paper into flowers, apply to Taiyang; also effective. Another method: Half liang castor kernel, fifteen jujubes, pound and spread on paper, roll into tube, insert into nostril; clear discharge stops immediately.
Eight types of head wind: Forty-nine castor seeds and forty-nine Gangzi seeds (shelled), one large piece of Qunaoxiong. Pound into mud, make pills the size of bullets, hang with thread in ventilated place to dry in shade. For use, mix fine tea powder into paste in a cup, burn charcoal under the medicine to produce smoke, cover with cup. When smoke finishes, add boiling scallion water to dissolve tea medicine and drink. Wrap head with cotton quilt, lie down, induce sweating, avoid wind (*Xiuzhen Fang*).

Acute throat obstruction, locked jaw: Pound castor kernels, roll in paper as tube, burn and inhale smoke to open passage. Using oil as wick is even better. Named Sheng Yantong.
Throat sores/swelling: *Du Ren Fang*: One castor kernel, one qian Puxiao, grind together, take with fresh well water; effective after two or three doses. *Sanyin Fang*: Equal parts castor kernel and Jingjie suishao. Grind to powder, honey pills. Wrap in cotton, hold in mouth to swallow.
Water qi abdominal distension: Grind castor kernels, extract juice to get three he. Take all at once in morning; green-yellow water should pass by noon. Or say strong adults take only five seeds (*Waitai Miyao*).

Facilitate childbirth/placenta delivery: Cui Yuanliang *Haishang Jiyan Fang*: Take seven castor seeds, remove shell, pound to paste, apply to sole. If fetus and placenta deliver, wash off immediately. Dog bite: Fifty castor seeds (shelled). Grind paste with well water. Wash wound with salt water, blow on pain site, then apply paste (*Xiuzhen Fang*).

Phlegm-asthma cough: *Rumen Shiqin* prescription: Three qian nine-point castor leaves, two qian refined Bai Fan. Slice four liang pork thinly, sprinkle medicine inside, wrap in lotus leaf, simmer with mild fire. Chew finely, swallow with plain water. Named Jiuxian San. *Puji Fang*: Treat cough with phlegm-wheezing, regardless of duration. Use frost-bitten castor leaves, frost-bitten mulberry leaves, Mi Ke (honey-roasted) each one liang. Grind to powder, honey pills size of bullets. Take one pill dissolved in plain water, once daily. Named Wuyou Wan.
【Appendix】Boluo Hui (*Shiyi*) Zang Qi said: Highly toxic. Indicated for malignant sores, goiter roots, tumors, polyps, vitiligo, gu-toxins, spirits/demons, stream-toxin sores. Mix with Baizhangqing and Ji Sang ash in equal parts, grind to powder and apply. Gu-toxins/spirits require other methods. Grows in southern Jiangnan valleys. Stems and leaves resemble castor bean. Stem is hollow, sounds like Boluo Hui when blown. Broken stem exudes yellow juice; poisonous to humans causing immediate death. Do not lightly use internally.
