(Recorded in the Lower Category of *Bie Lu*)
[Names] Shemei (Snake Strawberry, pronounced "bao"), Dimei (Ground Strawberry).
Li Rui stated: When silkworms mature, this fruit ripens to red on the ground. Those hollow inside are called Canmei (Silkworm Strawberry); those solid inside and extremely red are called Shecanmei (Snake Residue Strawberry). People do not eat them, fearing they contain residual snake venom.
[Collection and Explanation] Tao Hongjing stated: Shemei is abundant in gardens and fields. The fruits are crimson and closely resemble Rubus chingii (Fupenzi), but are inedible and not used as medicinal materials by anyone.
Su Baosheng stated: It grows everywhere, in low and damp places. The stem tips bear three leaves; flowers are yellow, fruits are crimson, resembling Rubus chingii, and roots resemble Patrinia scabiosifolia (Baijiang). Fruits are harvested in April and May; roots in February and August.
Zong stated: It is found everywhere in fields and by roadsides. It grows close to the ground with leaves like Rubus chingii, but smoother, smaller, and slightly wrinkled. Flowers are yellow, slightly larger than Tribulus terrestris (Jili) flowers. In late spring and early summer, it bears red fruits the color of lychee.
Ji stated: Shemei stems are less than a chi long, bearing only one fruit at the tip, small and smooth. Accidental ingestion causes abdominal distension. Unlike Rubus chingii, which has taller plants bearing multiple fruits with fine black hairs.
Shizhen stated: This plant spreads thin vines along the ground, rooting at nodes. Each branch has three leaves with serrated edges. Small yellow flowers with five petals bloom in April and May. The fruits are bright red, resembling Rubus chingii, but differ in surface and calyx. The roots are very fine; when Bencao texts mention using juice, it likely refers to extracting from stems, leaves, and roots together. Qiu Yuan's *Baishi* erroneously wrote it as Shimiao Cao, mentioning five or seven leaves. He also claimed folk legends say it kills humans upon ingestion, which is incorrect; it merely induces cold phlegm.
[Flavor and Properties] Sweet and sour, greatly cold, toxic.
[Main Indications] Persistent excessive heat in the chest and abdomen (*Bie Lu*). Highly effective for high fever caused by Shanghan (Cold Damage syndrome), as well as Xi Du (stream toxicity) and She Gong Du (archer bug toxicity) (Tao Hongjing). Regulates menstruation.
[Attached Prescriptions] Two old prescriptions, one new prescription.
1. Mouth ulcers with severe heat from epidemic febrile diseases: Take half sheng of natural juice from Shemei, swallow slowly. (*Shanghan Leyao*)
2. Ulcers in the lower body caused by inappropriate purgation in Shanghan: Administer two he of Shemei juice, three times daily. Also, soak Wumei (Mume Fruit) in water until concentrated, add cliff honey, and drink. (*Zhouhou Fang*)
3. Water poisoning disease: Powder the Shemei root and ingest it, also use to guide out toxins from the lower part. One may also drink one to two sheng of juice. Before entering water in summer, throw a small amount of powder into the current to ward off danger. Additionally, it repels...
