(From *Bencao Shiyi* [Supplement to Materia Medica])
[Names] Mumì (Wood Honey), cited in *Neidian* [Inner Canon]; Moxiang, cited in *Gangmu*.
[Collected Explanations] Chen Zangqi stated: Mixiang grows in Jiaozhou. It is a large tree with nodes resembling Chenxiang [Agarwood]. The commentary on the *Lotus Sutra* states: "Mumì" is fragrant honey. The tree resembles a locust tree but has fragrance; after felling it, one waits five or six years before harvesting its resin. *Yiwuzhi* [Record of Strange Things] notes: Its leaves resemble those of the Chinese Toon tree. The tree lives for a thousand years; once cut down and laid flat, after four or five years, upon inspection, the wood has rotted away, leaving only the solid, firm sections in the middle as the fragrant material. Li Shizhen commented: It grows in the mountains of the South Sea region. Cultivated trees produce fragrance within five or six years. *Jiaozhou Ji* [Records of Jiaozhou] states: The tree's appearance is indistinguishable from Agarwood. Li Shizhen added: According to *Wei Wang Huamu Zhi* [Flower and Tree Records by King Wei], "Mumì" is known as the "Thousand-Year Tree," with a very large root system. After felling, one waits four or five years to harvest the non-rotted parts as fragrance. Based on this, Chen Zangqi’s claim that the tree must be a thousand years old before cutting appears to be an error. Duan Chengshi’s *Youyang Zazu* [Miscellaneous Morsels from Youyang] states: The "Mo tree" originates from Persia and Fulin [Byzantine Empire/Arab lands], where locals call it "A KT." The tree grows over ten feet tall, with bluish-white bark, leaves longer than those of the locust tree, and flowers larger than orange blossoms. The fruit is black, sized like Cornus officinalis [Cornelian Cherry], and is sweet and sour, edible. *Guangzhou Zhi* [Local Gazetteer of Guangzhou] reports: Duoxiangmu [Polyosma] is produced in Xinxing County, Zhaoqing, commonly known as Mixiang. It repels evil odors and destroys demonic essences. *Jin Shu* [Book of Jin] records: In the fifth year of Taikang, Daqin [Roman Empire] presented paper made from Mixiang bark, which was slightly brownish, textured like fish roe, extremely fragrant, and tough. Considering these accounts, Mixiang is a type of Chenxiang [Agarwood]; thus, their shapes and functions are similar. *Nanyue Zhi* [Records of Southern Yue] states: People of Jiaozhou refer to Chenxiang as Mixiang. *Jiaozhou Zhi* [Local Gazetteer of Jiaozhou] notes: Mixiang resembles Chenxiang. *Lingbiao Luyi* [Strange Records from Beyond the Mountains] mentions: The bark paper of Zhanxiang [Stacked Agarwood] resembles fish roe. These sources corroborate each other. Yang Shen’s *Danqian Lu* [Records of Red Lead] claims the Mixiang tree is the Meliosma tree, which is incorrect. Additionally, the Zhi Ju tree [Armenian Quince] is also named Mumì; it is unknown if it belongs to the same category. See the Fruit Section for details.
