(From *Bencao Shiyi* [Supplement to Materia Medica])
[Ji Jie] Chen Cangqi stated: Tao Hongjing claimed that Tieluo (Iron Filings) is Tiejiang (Iron Slurry), which is incorrect. Tiejiang is obtained by soaking various iron vessels in water for a long time until the water turns green and foam appears; this liquid can be used to dye cloth black.
Li Shizhen stated: Tiejiang refers to water in which raw iron has been soaked, intended for human consumption. If fresh water is added periodically, over time a yellow paste forms on the iron surface, enhancing its efficacy. The preparation consumed by the Grand Empress Dowager of the Tang Dynasty was of this type. If one uses the water from dyeing cloth as medicinal slurry, it would be sour, bitter, foul-smelling, and astringent, making it unbearable to approach, let alone ingest.
[Qi Wei] Salty, cold, non-toxic.
[ Zhu Zhi] Calms the heart and brightens the eyes. Indicated for epilepsy with fever, Ji Huang (acute severe jaundice) accompanied by manic running, madness in livestock, and bites from snakes, dogs, tigers, wild wolves, or poisonous insects. Ingestion prevents toxins from entering the interior. It also helps resolve various poisons ingested into the abdomen (Chen Cangqi).
[Fu Fang] Two old formulas, three new formulas.
Shi Qi (epidemic qi) causing sores and chest heat: Drink Tiejiang (*Meishi Fang*).
All types of Ding Chuang (furuncles/boils): Drink one sheng of Tiejiang daily (*Qianjin Fang*).
Fa Bei (back carbuncle) at initial stage: Drink two sheng of Tiejiang to induce purgation (*Waitai Mi Yao*).
She Pi E Chuang (malignant skin ulcers): Frequently apply Tiejiang externally (*Tanyeweng Fang*).
Qi Chuang (lacquer dermatitis) causing itching: Frequently wash with Tiejiang until healed (*Waitai*).
(From *Bencao Gangmu* [Compendium of Materia Medica])
[Ji Jie] Li Shizhen stated: The old editions had numerous entries for iron implements; I have consolidated them into one section. Generally, these rely on the qi and properties of iron to soothe the Liver, detoxify, and provide heavy sedation, without other profound meanings.
Tie Chu (Iron Pestle) (From *Bencao Shiyi*. Refers to the pestle used for grinding herbs.)
[Qi Wei] Non-toxic.
[Zhu Zhi] For women with breech presentation (Heng Chan) and retained placenta (Bao Yi Bu Xia): Heat red-hot and quench in wine; drinking the wine facilitates normal delivery (Chen Cangqi).
Tie Cheng Chui (Iron Scale Weight) (From Song Dynasty *Kaibao Bencao*)
[Qi Wei] Pungent, warm, non-toxic.
[Zhu Zhi] Treats Zei Feng (wind-pathogen causing migratory pain). Stops postpartum blood stasis abdominal pain, and Hou Bi (throat obstruction due to heat). Heat red-hot, quench in wine, and drink while hot (*Kaibao Bencao*). Treats male hernia pain, female abdominal distension during pregnancy, Lou Tai (threatened miscarriage with bleeding), and sudden hemorrhage (Li Shizhen).
[Fu Fang] Four new formulas.
Hou Bi Zhong Tong (swollen and painful throat): Chew Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii (Changpu) root for juice; quench a red-hot scale weight in one cup of wine and drink (*Puji Fang*).
She Zhong Yan Tong (swollen tongue and sore throat), pharyngeal polyps, tongue swelling: Heat a scale weight red-hot, quench in one zhan of vinegar, and swallow/gargle (*Shenghui Fang*).
Accidental swallowing of bamboo or wood: Heat a scale weight red-hot, quench in wine, and drink (*Jixuan Fang*).
Bian Du (buboes/inflammation in groin) at initial stage: Vigorously lift the affected area to produce a sound. Rub and press with an iron scale weight overnight for resolution (*Jijian Fang*).
