[Compendium of Materia Medica]
[Ji Jie (Collected Explanations)] Li Shizhen states: This is silver ore from Persia, also written as "Xilin Zhi" (Tin-Lin Grease).
[Zhu Zhi (Main Indications)] Treats eye nebula (corneal opacity): apply by lightly touching with a copper needle heated in fire, then apply this substance; it causes no pain. It also treats all kinds of wind-pathogens, and the excessive drinking associated with Sanjiao Xiao Ke (Sanjiao Wasting-Thirst syndrome), and can be incorporated into pill preparations (Li Shizhen).
[Fu Fang (Supplementary Prescriptions)] New Prescription 1.
For pediatric Tian Diao disease (infantile convulsion) with excessive phlegm and irregular spasms: Take one qian of Xilin Zhi (wash with water until black residue is gone), one fen of Mercury (grind with a small amount of jujube flesh until no mercury droplets are visible), half a fen of Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang), and half a fen of Moschus (Shexiang). Grind uniformly and form pills the size of Setaria italica seeds using glutinous rice paste. Administer thirty-two pills per dose, washed down with fresh cold water. Named Baoming Dan (Life-Preserving Pill). (From Puji Fang)
[Tang Bencao]
[Ji Jie (Collected Explanations)] Su Gong states: The method involves combining white tin, silver foil, and mercury to synthesize it. It solidifies hard like silver, and the refining process follows specific techniques.
Li Shizhen states: What is currently called "Yincui" (Brittle Silver) among alchemists is likely this substance.
[Qi Wei (Flavor and Properties)] Pungent, greatly cold, toxic.
[Zhu Zhi (Main Indications)] Treats Re Feng (Wind-Heat), palpitations due to Heart deficiency, mental confusion, manic wandering, heat above the diaphragm, heat in the head and face, wind attacking the heart region up and down. It calms the spirit and stabilizes the will, settles the Heart, brightens the eyes, promotes urination, treats Heart Wind amnesia, and can also aid in the repair of missing or fallen teeth (Su Gong).
[Ri Hua Bencao]
[Ji Jie (Collected Explanations)] Li Shizhen states: This is produced by alchemists refining various drugs together with Cinnabar (Zhusha). He Ding Xin Shu states: Cinnabar receives the Qi of Qingyang (Spring/East), initially forming ore. After two hundred years, it becomes cinnabar, where Qinvu (associated with Yin/Winter) conceives within it. After three hundred years, it transforms into Lead. After another two hundred years, it becomes Silver. After yet another two hundred years, it regains Taihe Qi (Harmonious Qi) and transforms into Gold. It further states: Jin Gong (Metal/Lead) takes Cinnabar as its offspring; this is Yang within Yin. When Yang dies and Yin coagulates, the supreme treasure is formed.
[Qi Wei (Flavor and Properties)] Cold, non-toxic. Da Ming states: It is incompatible with Tingli Zhi (Stibnite), Magnetitum (Cishi), and Iron. It forbids consumption of all blood products.
[Zhu Zhi (Main Indications)] Promotes longevity and improves complexion, settles the Heart and calms the spirit, stops palpitations, expels evil pathogens, treats Zhong E Gu Du (Sudden Evil and Gu Poison), Heart Heat with irritability, worry-induced forgetfulness, and physical debility (Da Ming).
